Computational power that is all pervasive, mobile and totally invisible is the ghost in the machine that has colonised every aspect of our lives today. Without this unseen force, a vast range of everyday operational tasks and activities whose ease of operation we take for granted would be far more difficult or even impossible to carry out. Many of these "intelligent" gadgets and applications function independently of any human agency - truly a miracle of modern life.
These computer-based mobile applications are to be found shadowing a vast range of human activity - be it systems used in sport, medicine and care of the elderly. Or they can be found in the broader infrastructure of our social lives, in automated control systems for homes and in smart cars that automatically adapt to traffic conditions and even helps drivers to respond to the fickle moods of the weather.
Mobile Computing students will undertake a more in-depth examination of the almost limitless possibilities of a truly global, all-pervasive, mobile computing connectivity. Broad, in-depth technical knowledge in one or more specialist areas equips them with the pro-active qualities that underpin leadership/management positions, and can lead to high-flying careers.
Be it conceptualisation of communications systems, development of new interactive technologies for mobile phone applications, the design of a smart home environment or implementation of new mobile services - there is hardly an area in which our graduates won´t be able to thrive.
Curriculum
The Master´s degree in Mobile Computing builds on the Bachelor´s programme of the same name and continues the tried-and-tested syllabus combination of software development, communications technologies and telecommunication engineering. All relevant areas of mobile computing are covered.
The degree programme (duration: 4 semesters) allows specialisation in one or more of the following subject areas:
* Mobile Computing
* Ubiquitous Computing
* Mobile Infotainment
* Mobile Software Techniques
In each of these focus areas you attend a specific number of core modules and a variable number of further modules to deepen your knowledge. Additional interdisciplinary elective courses and seminars are also available; these vary from semester to semester.
Flexible curriculum: In consultation with their personal academic adviser, students choose which modules they attend in which semester
Semesters abroad: The fexible curriculum allows students to undertake out-of-country studies (foreign language modules available on Hagenberg campus)
Master´s thesis: In semester 4 (preparatory projects in semester 3)
