For most countries, hospitals represent the main concentrations of health resources, professional skills and medical equipment. Care of patients is resource intensive, and requires modern techniques and well-trained staff. Hospitals are a crucial component of primary health care, supporting lower-level facilities through, for example, treating referred patients. A hospital is a complex organisation, containing a series of subsystems (for example, human resources, finance, diagnostic services). Any changes in the health system or subsystems can affect other components. How can a hospital manager ensure that their hospital's services are high-quality, available, acceptable and affordable to communities, and are working in partnership with local health services?

The Master of Hospital Management is designed for graduates or health professionals with some acquaintance with management roles in a hospital setting. The course is set primarily within the context of public health services, but it is also relevant for managers of NGOs, mission and private hospitals. It is expected that participants will draw on their own knowledge of hospitals in class-work and assignments, and applicants without any hospital experience will normally be expected to gain such experience before starting the course. This course has been offered by the Nuffield Centre since 1992, and is one of only two courses in the UK focusing on low-middle income countries.

Contents

The programme will:
* Provide an international learning environment within which students drawn from a variety of professional background around the world benefit and learn from their collective professional and cultural experiences.
* Offer opportunities to develop the ability to think analytically; a capacity for independent learning; an awareness of the importance of and opportunities for continuing professional development; and the capability to complete a challenging, extended piece of independent study.
* Enable students to attain high levels of professional skill whilst also pursuing a range of study interests in a learning environment where research informs teaching with optional module choices and where dissertation choices are supported by staff research interests.

And also:
* Develop the essential learning skills for postgraduate level study within a structured framework with particular emphasis on the challenges facing those returning to study.
* Provide an understanding of the role and functions of hospitals and their health care context, and an opportunity to study the management, planning and policy issues involved in the development of contemporary hospitals in developing health care systems, retaining throughout a focus on understanding the local and national health context.
* Develop awareness of the responsibilities of senior hospital management, including understanding the role and functions of hospitals and their health care context and prepare to handle the management and development issues faced by a hospital manager, including structure and organisation; planning and managing resources; and reviewing and evaluating services.
* Encourage comparative study of national and international health policy issues.
* Provide an appreciation of the conceptual framework within which public health policy and management is located, building upon this to provide core knowledge of the principles of hospital management and subsequently offering areas of specialist study in optional modules, many derived from the current research interests of staff.
* By introducing the Learning Portfolio, strongly encourage a reflective approach to learning which can form the basis of career-long independent learning; develop a capacity for independent learning and an awareness of the importance of continued professional development.
* Provide a hospital experience attachment (compulsory) which ensures that operational problems and situations are experienced in a context that demonstrates how these are addressed in practice.
* Offer the opportunity to plan, initiate, execute and write up a substantial piece of independent research, in the form of the compulsory dissertation, within a supportive framework which provides specific research methods training and preparation for the dissertation.
