The rapid development of this profession in the quickly changing world of healthcare delivery requires dedicated programmes to be available that instil the knowledge and skills that this exacting role demands.

Loughborough University has met this need by building on its established suite of healthcare management programmes.

Whilst the programme does focus principally on healthcare fire safety in the UK National Health Service it also addresses issues and concerns specific to the Independent Health and Social Care Sector.

What qualification is available and how long does it take?
The Loughborough Postgraduate Certificate in Healthcare Fire Safety Management requires students to undertake three modules and takes approximately eight months of part-time study.

What will I learn?
There are three taught modules. Each module requires that students attend a five-day non-residential course at Loughborough University, in addition to home study. Teaching methods include case studies, role play, discussion, lectures and presentations. The three modules are as follows:

The Fire Manager´s Role

* Methods of investigating fire.
* Fire hazards and risk in healthcare establishments.
* Technical fire control measures.
* Fire safety legislation.

Assessment of Fire Risk

* Proactive risk assessment systems including HFMEA.
* Reactive risk assessment systems including RCA, logic trees and SEA.
* Management of fire risk registers.
* S4BH and NHSLA standards.

Fire Safety Governance

* Fire safety policy creation and management.
* Development of fire risk control strategies.
* Emergency planning within fire risk control.
* Performance indicators in fire safety management.
* The role of the Fire Policy Group.


Contents

The Certificate and Diploma programmes comprise taught modules which require students to attend a five-day non-residential course at Loughborough University per module, in addition to home study. Teaching methods include case studies, role play, discussion, lectures and presentations. The MSc comprises a dissertation supported via distance learning.

Ideally candidates should hold a relevant first degree or Corporate Membership of a British Chartered Profession or other qualifications approved by the University.

In practice, the University adopts a flexible approach to admission requirements. Candidates without conventional qualifications but with relevant experience may be invited for an interview.

English language

All applicants must have an acceptable qualification in English language before they can be admitted to any postgraduate programme. Below are the main English language qualifications acceptable for entry to the University (these are the minimum and some departments may require higher levels):

* GCSE English Language – Grade C or above
* IELTS band 6.5 or above with not less than 6.0 in each sub test
* TOEFL (including the Tests in Written and Spoken Practice) minimum score of 100 (Internet-based test) with specific requirements for sub tests
