The two-year Master´s degree programme in Energy and Environmental Sciences is connected to the Energy and Sustainability Research Institute Groningen (ESRIG). It has two specializations: System studies on Energy and Environment, and Experimental studies of Energy and Climate.
The first specialization has a strong design-orientated, systemsapproach character based in natural sciences. What are the possibilities for a sustainable future for a region or a country? What characterizes the optimal transition routes towards a sustainable future? This specialization is linked to the ESRIG Centre for Energy and Environmental Studies (IVEM).
The second specialization is linked to the ESRIG Centre for Isotope Research (CIO) with important contributions from other groups within ESRIG with an experimental, energy-related research programme. It covers a range of research topics such as the enhanced greenhouse effect and the carbon cycle in atmosphere and ocean, gas combustion studies, geo-energy, polymer solar cells, biofuels, climate history. It focuses on experimental methods.
Both paths include a collective part of three compulsory modules and a specialist part. In addition, the programmes include an optional part and two research projects.
Career prospects
Environmental scientists from the University of Groningen are known for their systems-approach and all-round skills. In general they easily obtain jobs in their field of study, and they have careers in science (both university and research institutes), in industry and also in major consultancy firms, governmental agencies and companies.
The master programme Energy and Environmental Sciences includes two programmes:
* The general programme Energy and Environment
* The specialisation `Experimental studies of greenhouse gases and climate history´
Both programmes include a collective part consisting of three compulsory courses and a specialist part consisting of one or two compulsory courses. Besides that the programmes include an optional part and two researches.
The two programmes are:
Energy and Environment
* Optional part with an interdisciplinary character
* Energy and Materials
* Current topics
* Resources and Sustainable Development
* Introduction to Energy and Environmental Sciences
* Free optional
* Research
Specialisation `Experimental studies of greenhouse gases and climate history´
* Introduction to Energy and Environmental Sciences
* Resources and Sustainable Development
* Current topics
* Experimental Methods in trace gas research
* Global change from a physics perspective
* Optional part with a natural science character
* Free optional part
* Research
