World-class organizations are able to combine internal efficiency with fast delivery, reliability, quality, and flexibility. This requires, first of all, perfect organization of the production process and the service provision, and secondly, adequate control and planning. This is the domain of Operations Management. The operations manager organizes and co-ordinates the relevant processes and brings the production of goods and services in line with market demands.

The University of Groningen has many Operations & Supply Chains experts and thus has much to offer in this field. Their broad experience with applications of Operations Management in many different companies has resulted in a Master´s degree specialization that combines hands-on expertise with the latest theoretical developments.

The programme focuses on the various types of manufacturing companies and service industries. A production line at Philips Domestic Appliances requires a different approach than clientspecific, custom jobs in the dock of a yacht-building firm. Various management philosophies, methodologies, and techniques will be investigated.

Students will learn about concepts such as Just-in-Time and Lean & Agile Manufacturing, in which operations are coordinated to such an extent that they guide the product streams through the company like a well-oiled machine. Students learn to choose the right approach and to apply it. But most of all, they will learn to formulate the right concept for specific practical situations themselves, since no company is alike...

Students can specialize in either service industries or manufacturing and distribution companies, but it is also possible to combine the two. Manufacturing and distribution companies need specific expertise in supply chain management and global operations.

Some grounding in ICT is also important. Service industries have their own specific issues, such as workflow management, division of tasks between front office and back-office, and so on. Particularly in service industries, operations management is strongly linked with quality management.

Groningen has a Professor of Quality Management who will explain the ins and outs of this field.

Contents

The Operations & Supply Chains field course (10 EC) is the main subject in the first semester. It provides an in-depth study of the field of operations management and prepares students for the operations management projects they will carry out within a company or organization.

Students who specialize in manufacturing and distribution companies will also take the Information Systems for Operations & Supply Chains course. Those who opt for the service industry specialization will take Service Operations. The programme has room for optional subjects, such as Advanced Purchasing and Supply Management or Business-to-Business Marketing. Subjects from Finance/Accounting, HRM, ICT, Business Development or Technology Management can also be chosen.

The second semester revolves around the final project, which is always practical in nature. The final project is relatively large. During the second semester, students will also take the Global Operations & Supply Chains course (specialization: production and distribution) or the Advanced Quality Management course (specialization: services).

For a complete study programme and extra information about the (optional) modules, use the link on the right-hand side of this page to the Ocasys electronic syllabus and select the programme: `MSc BA - Operations & Supply Chains´.

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.

Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
