The Master in International History is a two-year programme that provides in-depth training in international history and politics ; it allows students to gain access, subject to certain conditions, to the PhD programme in international history and politics.
The MA in International History requires intensive work at an advanced level in the field of international history and politics, and familiarization with at least one other discipline (anthropology/sociology of development, international economics, international law, or international relations).
The degree programme comprises compulsory courses, optional seminars and the writing of an original research dissertation (mémoire) in the course of the second year.
In September 2011, the Institute will offer a fast track option, allowing students to complete a combined MA-PhD in 5 years instead of 6. For further information, please refer to the MA and PhD regulations.
The MA in International History will provide participants with the tools and approaches necessary for a rigorous analysis of the historical evolution of contemporary international relationships and global structures.
The Graduate Institute also offers disciplinary Masters in Anthropology/Sociology of Development, Economics, International History or International Relations, as well as multidisciplinary Masters in International Affairs or Development Studies.
Combining traditional and innovative perspectives, the Master in International History provides a historical background in a range of the Institute’s areas of specialisation. Courses cover the history of international relations and non-governmental organisations, global history, transatlantic relations, European integration, Asian and African history, minorities, nationalism, the history of economic development, and terrorism.
