In the area of international and development studies, anthropology and sociology are indispensable for the comparative study of global concerns from below, from the margins and across borders, with a focus on the role of non-State actors and social movements. The new disciplinary programme to be put in place for the 2011-12 academic year aims to provide students with the analytical and methodological tools to explore the social and cultural systems that influence, and are influenced by, policy interventions, especially – but not exclusively – in the field of development. Other areas of interest include conflict and peace-building, location and migration, as well as identity politics.
The Master in Anthropology and Sociology of Development is a two-year programme that provides in-depth training in Anthropology and Sociology from an international perspective, including familiarization with at least one other discipline taught at the Institute (international economics, international history and politics, international law or international relations). It allows students to gain access, subject to certain conditions, to the PhD programme in Anthropology and Sociology of Development.
The degree programme comprises compulsory courses, optional seminars and the writing of an original research dissertation (mémoire) in the course of the second year.
The Master in Anthropology and Sociology of Development is a programme designed for students interested in the comparative study of global issues from below, from the margins, and across borders. It explores development in a critical and forward-looking manner as pertaining to all regions in the world including the Global South. Courses in the programme equip students with analytical and methodological tools in anthropology and sociology to explore four key themes: Power and conflict; space, population and mobility;
social movements and transformations; culture and identity.
