International Administration and Global Governance (IAGG) is an interdisciplinary program focusing on the analysis and understanding of problems related to governance issues in the international arena. The degree will prepare students for professional careers in organizations dealing with aspects of international administration and global governance, as well as for post-graduate research in the field. The curriculum integrates the academic study of international trends and issues with more practical training related to policy analysis and advocacy.
The program is offered jointly by the Department of Economics, the Department of Political Science, and the School of Global Studies.
Required coursework consists of three core courses. The first two, Theoretical and Historical Perspectives on Global Governance and International Administration and Policy, deal with substantive issues related to economic, political and social development as they play out in the international arena. These courses are uniquely interdisciplinary, integrating perspectives from economics, political science, international relations, and international development studies.
The third mandatory course, Research Methods, provides the analytical tools to conduct and evaluate social science research as well as carry out policy analysis and evaluation.
Theoretical and Historical Perspectives on Global Governance explores the primary policy theories in areas such as peace and conflict studies, and economic, social and political development. Why have some policy ideas been embraced and others not? What ramifications have theories of development policy had, and for whom? Understanding how schools of thought develop, gain footing in the international arena and are, or fail to be, implemented at the international, national or local levels sheds light on the factors that enable or limit efforts to effect change in the world.
International Administration and Policy focuses on the contemporary architecture of the international arena, investigating the relations among international organisations and between international organisations and various state and non-state actors. Through analyses of specific cases in international economic, political and social development, the course develops abilities to forecast the effects of different policy approaches, and provide the skills needed to develop policy proposals and strategies for advocacy and implementation of those policies.
Two elective courses allow for individual specialization in a functional or regional area. One of these courses must be chosen from a short list of courses designated as ‘fördjupningskurs’ while the second elective requirement may be fulfilled with any masters level course from the three host departments.
IAGG emphasizes the practical application of theoretical insights and analytical methods. Students may therefore elect to do an optional 10 weeks internship in place of one elective coures. An independent full semester research project in the form of a masters thesis concludes the program.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
More informationThe minimum entry requirement is a Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of 60 higher education credits (hec) in a social science discipline. 60 higher education credits is the equivalent of 2 semesters of full time coursework. Preference is given to applicants with 60 hec specifically in one of the following disciplines: political science, economics, international relations, global studies, or global development studies and international development cooperation. Additional coursework (15 hec) in a second of these disciplines is an additional merit.
Finally, successful applicants should be fluent in English. This requirement is filled if the language of an applicant’s undergraduate studies was English, or through English B level or English proficiency equivalent to IELTS 6.5 (no part under 5.5) or TOEFL (minimum 575), or TWE (score 4.5).
