The International Masters in Economy, State and Society (IMESS) is an established two-year double degree Masters programme, taught in English and offered by a consortium of leading European universities headed by UCL - London’s research and teaching powerhouse and one of the top five
universities worldwide (THES–QS 2009). IMESS draws on an unparalleled pool of resources to offer the definitive Masters course focusing on the economies, states and societies of Central and Eastern Europe.
The programme, recognised for its excellence by the European Union's Erasmus Mundus Programme, offers three distinct study tracks, reflecting the unique multidisciplinary expertise of the consortium institutions. The study tracks are:
* Politics and Security
* Economics and Business*
* Nation, History and Society
Each track combines specialist electives (economics, politics, society or history), research methods training (social sciences or humanities), and language tuition (Czech, Estonian, Finnish, Hungarian, Polish, Russian or Serbian) with an advanced research dissertation conducted during the latter part of the degree.
Click here for a detailed Programme Overview and country-specific course requirements.
* To be eligible for the Economics and Business track, applicants must normally have studied both Macroeconomics and Microeconomics as part of their undergraduate degree.
Who is IMESS for?
The Masters programme is designed to attract and challenge the brightest EU and international students (final year undergraduates may apply) as well as professionals wishing to retrain to acquire European expertise and meet the challenges of the changing global environment. Evidence of English language ability is essential but there are no other language pre-requisites. Students from all states may apply to the programme and there are Erasmus Mundus Scholarships for both EU and non-EU students.
Additionally, for established International Scholars the IMESS consortium offers a number of fFellowships for Visiting Scholars of between 2 weeks and 3 months to be spent at one of the consortium universities, conducting research in the spirit of IMESS and contributing to the teaching of IMESS.
The IMESS degree offers three distinct interdisciplinary study tracks, reflecting the unique multidisciplinary expertise of the IMESS partner institutions. Students enrol onto one of the study tracks and specialise, from beginner's level, in one of the partner institution languages. Additionally, for non-native English speakers a nine-week course in 'Academic writing in English' is included in the first semester at UCL. Each IMESS track combines compulsory language training, research methodology, specialist electives and a research dissertation carried out from the end of the first year.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.

Finnish Universities are accredited by the law. Universities are responsible for the quality and continuous development of their education and other operations. Legislation also requires them to regularly perform external evaluations of their operations and quality systems and to publish the results of such evaluations. Finnish HEIs decide on their own quality systems, and the comprehensiveness, functioning and effectiveness of the systems are evaluated in the audits, which are valid for six years.
