The International Master’s Degree Programme in Food of Life is an integrated, cross-disciplinary, world-class course in the science of animal-derived foods. The graduates of the Programme will be awarded a double degree. Food of Life students acquire in-depth knowledge in all the relevant animal science and food science aspects of the food production chain. Food is essential to life – and foods of animal origin comprise a vital part of the diet of much of the human population.
Food of Life students graduate exceptionally well equipped for a career in the food production industries, as these industries face the major challenges in our increasingly affluent and populous world set by two major phenomena: the increased global requirement for meat and milk products as well as the growing emphasis on product quality, proven health benefits for the consumer, improved animal health and welfare, and reduced environmental impact.
Food of Life students learn the basic theoretical knowledge, practical technologies, research and development methodologies as well as the social and cultural aspects of the food production chain. The acquired knowledge has relevance to both consumer and production animal health not only in a European but also in a worldwide context. The Programme is be offered by four European partner Universities (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, the University of Copenhagen, the University of Helsinki and the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences).
The 120 ECTS Programme is arranged fully in English and comprise one year (60 ECTS) at two of the partner universities each. Students attend an introductory module at the start of the first year and a summer school at the beginning of the second year. These modules, combined with monthly web-based workshops, Journal Clubs and Kitchen Clubs, ensure a strong community aspect to the education – not to mention the opportunity to acquire skills in new languages (Catalan, Spanish, Danish, Finnish, or Swedish).
Students also have an option for a study period with the Associate Partners in North America, United Kingdom, New Zealand, and Italy. The study periods can include a variety of components, including research courses, laboratory experience, or industry experience. The international nature of the Food of Life Programme is emphasised through the involvement of visiting scholars from the Associate Partners and others. The component degrees constituting the Food of Life double degree are in animal science and/or food science disciplines, depending on the choice of study partners.
The EM Food of Life Masters Course has inputs in both animal and food science, and outputs relevant to both consumer and animal health.
Food: Meat and milk products derived from all the relevant farm species including
pigs, cattle, small ruminants and poultry
Life: Effects of nutrition on the health of the consumer, and effects of production

The course comprises one year (60 ECTS) at each of two of the four EM Food of Life partner institutions.
All students will attend an Introductory Module at the start of Year One and a Summer School at the start of Year Two.
Students will also have the opportunity of a study period with Associate Partners in North America, United Kingdom, New Zealand and Italy. Study Periods may comprise research courses, laboratory experience or industry experience.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.

Finnish Universities are accredited by the law. Universities are responsible for the quality and continuous development of their education and other operations. Legislation also requires them to regularly perform external evaluations of their operations and quality systems and to publish the results of such evaluations. Finnish HEIs decide on their own quality systems, and the comprehensiveness, functioning and effectiveness of the systems are evaluated in the audits, which are valid for six years.
