The goal of TRANSMED is to train students coming from multiple disciplines to pursue successful careers in research and application of translational medicine. From the students the interdisciplinary nature of TRANSMED requires dedication and good study skills.

The core of the 2-year master's programme consists of medical sciences, up-to-date methodology, interdisciplinary communication skills and practical training in research groups. Clinical rounds with a specialist physician mentor at the Helsinki University Hospital will permit the students to directly encounter the practice of medicine, from the viewpoint of a physician and a patient.

After completion of their Master of Science degree in Translational Medicine the students are eligible and strongly encouraged to apply to the several PhD training programmes within the Faculty of Medicine, or in other Faculties and Universities.

Career Prospects
An essential part of the new programme are the clinical experiences permitting the students to encounter the practice of medicine. These are provided by clinical rotations, training periods carried out in co-operation with the university hospital, which will help the students to understand medical research also from the view point of patient care, and let them see how discoveries in basic research lead to the development of new therapeutic approaches in the clinic.

After completion of their Master of Science degree in Translational Medicine the students are eligible and strongly encouraged to apply to the several PhD training programmes within the Faculty of Medicine or elsewhere for academic research careers. The degree will also enable the graduates to pursue careers in biotech or pharmaceutical industry or in governmental agencies.

Successful students are eligible to apply to several PhD training programmes through recruitment in research groups. Currently the number of research groups in the UH Faculty of Medicine alone exceeds 300.

Finnish HEIs decide on their own quality systems, and the comprehensiveness, functioning and effectiveness of the systems are evaluated in the audits, which are valid for six years.
