Location of Central European University (CEU)

The Department of Medieval Studies offers a multidisciplinary curriculum that integrates medieval historical topics from a number of regional and chronological perspectives.

Master of Arts in Medieval Studies (One Year)

This program is designed for applicants with a strong research agenda and academic background in medieval history or related disciplines. Students in the program pursue an intensive, interdisciplinary study of the Middle Ages, and can choose specializations in religious studies, urban history, cultural heritage studies, environmental/landscape history, Late Antique, Byzantine and early Ottoman studies, and medieval manuscript studies.

Career Paths

Graduates find employment in education, academia, cultural and research institutions, museums, business and international organizations. Master’s students often pursue doctoral studies.

* Western, Central, and Eastern European history of the Middle Ages
* Eastern Mediterranean history from Constantine the Great to Suleiman the Magnificent (combining Late Antique, Byzantine, Eastern Christian, Islamic and Ottoman studies)
* Environmental/landscape history
* History of religion, philosophy, and science
* Social science approaches to material culture, art history, archaeology, cultural anthropology, and manuscript studies
