Location of University of Freiburg

The University of Freiburg Master's degree in European Linguistics is a two-year programme which has been running most successfully since 2004. This highly competitive international Master’s programme (on average 80-90 % of the programme participants are international students) is designed for students interested in a more in-depth study of theoretical and descriptive linguistics.

It creates a solid basis for linguistic analysis and comparison, conveys a sound understanding of the rich and fascinating linguistic landscape of Europe, and imparts skills in up to four European languages. A wide variety of seminars and lectures are offered in five linguistic modules. An additional research module includes an internship abroad, a conference visit, and classes on research design and presentation skills.

The Modular Structure
The course of study in European Linguistics is modularised. Modules are the basic, thematically coherent block of learning.

Most modules involve both compulsory and optional elements.

The Modules and Courses
During the course of study you may select from among the following modules:

Linguistic Modules

* The European Languages: Structures, Typology and Language Contact
* Varieties and Minority Languages in Europe
* Schools and Traditions of Linguistic Thought in Europe
* Multilingual and Multicultural Communication in Europe
* The Linguistic History of Europe

Additional Modules

* Language instruction in up to four European languages (including courses to acquire practical language skills and courses focusing on the structure of lesser taught European languages).
* A research module including an internship abroad, a conference visit, and classes on research design and presentation skills.

Further information
* All compulsory courses are held in English or German. Students can choose to write their Master's thesis in either language. Students will also acquire skills in other European languages and will be free to select optional courses taught in these languages.
* The degree programme in European Linguistics starts in April every year. It is designed as a full-time course of study spanning four semesters, i.e. two years.
* The degree programme uses the ECTS (European Credit Transfer System) credit point system. This system quantifies workload in terms of the amount of time students will have to afford for successful participation in the respective courses, examinations, or other types of scholarly pursuit. One ECTS point corresponds to 25 hours of work, such that in one year students are expected to invest roughly 1500 hours in their course of study (60 ECTS). The advantages of the ECTS point system are twofold: it enables students interested in studying abroad or transferring to do so more easily, as all credits earned at individual universities and institutes of higher education are recognised by all European universities; this European-wide implemented system allows students' work and progress to be assessed over the course of their studies rather than being heavily weighted on the final thesis and examination. In order to receive a Master's Degree a total or 120 ECTS points must be accumulated. Students are expected to accumulate 30 ECTS credit points per semester.

IELTS

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.

Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.

Requirements

* Only applicants who meet the following prerequisites will be considered for admittance:
* applicants must hold at least a BA or an equivalent qualification in linguistics or a related field from an accredited university. Applicants who have obtained a BA in another field can be considered for admittance provided that they are able to demonstrate an adequate knowledge of linguistics or have sufficient background and experience in the field. Those candidates whose studies are marked by above-average academic performance in linguistics have a strong advantage in the application process;
* the candidates’ language skills in English and German must correspond to at least the C1 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. Exceptions can be made for prospective students whose language ability in one of the languages is only at the B2 level on the condition that the C1 level has been reached prior to matriculation. In this case, applicants would have the opportunity to enrol in an intensive language course at the University of Freiburg Language Learning Institute. These intensive courses take place during the spring holidays. Applicants must provide evidence of their language ability in the form an internationally accepted certificate unless the language in question is their native language.

Tip: More information regarding the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFRL) is available on wikipedia. If you wish to get an impression of your language ability according to the CEFRL, please refer to this assessment grid.

* Only candidates who have submitted a complete application by the deadline will receive notification of acceptance or rejection.
