Master of Arts in Historical Studies with a Focus on Medieval Studies (Two-year Program), taught jointly with the Department of History
The two-year program specifically addresses the needs of students who have a three-year background in history or another discipline related to medieval studies. Students comprise two groups, one focusing on modern history and the other on medieval studies.
The Department of Medieval Studies promotes a comprehensive multidisciplinary curriculum in medieval studies for students with diverse backgrounds (history, art history, archaeology, language and literature, philosophy and theology). The programs offer the opportunity to study late antique, Central, Eastern and Western European, Byzantine, Islamic and Ottoman cultures (c. AD 300-1550), with an emphasis on encompassing and integrating historical themes such as textual traditions, forms of learning, beliefs and mentalities, economic and cultural practices, and material objects from varied regional and chronological perspectives.
The student/faculty ratio for the Department of Medieval Studies is 7:1.
Career Paths
Many graduates of the Master´s programs go on to doctoral programs at CEU or elsewhere, others are employed in academic or research positions, museums or in the management of cultural monuments and collections.

Selected Areas of Research
Research at the department focuses on the history of Central, Southeastern and Eastern Europe from the sixteenth century to present times, and also goes beyond these geographical and temporal boundaries in a comparative perspective. The curriculum combines empirical research with cutting-edge methodological and theoretical reflection. The faculty has a strong research profile in a multitude of areas, including: history of ideas, social history, gender studies, nationalism studies, urban studies, history of life sciences, comparative politics. The department also offers specialized courses and qualified supervision in Jewish studies, Ottoman studies, and the comparative history of empires. Many of the department´s research projects are undertaken with the support of Pasts, Inc. Center for Historical Studies. The center has sponsored a range of lecture series, workshops, and conferences, especially geared to encourage communication among junior scholars from the region. CEU-Comparative History Project Sponsored by the Higher Education Support Program (HESP)This three-year project helps to develop Comparative History as a specialization of courses within a set of target departments in the region of Central, Southeastern and Eastern Europe, with CEU acting as the core and the coordinator of the group. Jewish Studies Project (JSP)The Jewish Studies Project offers a specialization in Jewish Studies for students in the Nationalism Studies Program in conjunction with the Department of History. JSP at Central European University has helped revitalize the study of Jewish history, culture and society in a region where these topics were long considered taboo. Students can choose from core courses taught by permanent CEU faculty as well as a wide range of courses taught by visiting professors from Israel, North America and Western Europe. Additionally, the project also runs a lecture series, sponsors conferences and publishes a yearbook. Further information about the project is available at: http://web.ceu.hu/jewishstudies/Religious Studies ProgramStudents in this specialization, as a part of their Master´s program either at the Department of History or the Department of Medieval Studies, engage in the study of religious phenomena from a historical point of view in social, institutional, cultural, intellectual and political contexts, and from a variety of interdisciplinary perspectives. The specialization focuses on the study of religious thought and traditions of the three monotheistic religions, with a special emphasis on Western and Eastern Christianity. More informationApplicants for the two-year MA in Historical Studies must have a minimum three years of BA studies in history, art history, archaeology, philosophy, philology or one of the relevant source languages. In addition to meeting the General CEU Admissions Requirements, applicants are also required to submit a 500-word description of their proposed research topic, specifying the primary sources and related secondary literature. Applicants may also be required to take a source language examination.
