Location of University of Amsterdam

The European Union is by far the most legally developed international institution in the world. Its continuing evolution results in new legal problems and yields new solutions on almost a daily basis, making it a fascinating area for legal research and learning. The track in European Union Law, one of the four tracks within the Master of International and European Law, offers specialisations in European Substantive Law (focusing on European competition law, European environmental law, European migration law, European criminal law and law of the internal market) and Institutional Law (covering European constitutional law, law of the economic and monetary union, EU legislation and EU legal remedies).

Studying European Union Law at the University of Amsterdam

In addition to the core courses, many specialised courses on various aspects of European law are offered as electives. The academic staff are highly qualified European and international lawyers. Students will become familiar with a wide range of European and international institutions and will receive guidance in finding internships.


Contents

The track in European Union Law consists of:

  • compulsory courses totalling 20 ECTS credits
  • creditselectives totalling 30 ECTS credits
  • final thesis: 10 ECTS credits

Students are expected to obtain 60 ECTS credits throughout the course of the degree.
The core courses are:

  • European Competition Law or European Constitutional Law (10 ECTS credits)
  • Law of Public International Organisations (5 ECTS credits)
  • International and European Law in the National Legal Order (5 ECTS credits)

Evaluation methods focus on the development of writing, analytical and communication skills as well as on an in-depth knowledge of European Union law. Written and oral assignments are preferred over traditional exams.

Degree requirements

Upon completion of all programme requirements, students will receive a Master in International and European Law, and the title Master of Laws (LLM).

Thesis

The Master's programme concludes with a thesis on a substantive issue in the field of European Law (10 ECTS credits). Students will research and write the thesis under the supervision of their faculty adviser. The topic will be mutually agreed upon between the student and the adviser.

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.

Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.

Educational background

Entry to the Master's programme depends on your academic background:

Academic background in law:

  • An academic level comparable with a Dutch Bachelor of laws diploma.
  • For the Master's programme International and European Law (any specialisation) a basic knowledge of Public International Law and European law is required. The Amsterdam Law School offers a deficiency course only in European Union Law. This course is provided by the Law School in September. Credits earned in this courses are not included in the required 60 ECTS credits. The Amsterdam Law School does not offer an deficiency course in Public International Law.

English language proficiency

A good command of the English language is a prerequisite. The Amsterdam Law School accepts the following tests:

  • TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) - minimum score 100
  • Cambridge International Examinations - minimum level C
  • IELTS (International English Language Testing System - minimum score 7

The Amsterdam Law School only accepts English language proficiency test results that are no more than one year old at the time of application.

Please note: Before choosing a specific test, please consult the Dutch immigration authorities in your country for a confirmation concerning the validity of the English language proficiency test. In the case of China, for example, only the IELTS test is valid for immigration purposes.

Accreditation

The quality of this Master's programme has been positively assessed by the Accreditation Organisation of The Netherlands and Flanders (NVAO). This means that upon successful completion of the programme, students will receive a legally accredited Master's degree in International and European Law and the title Master of Laws (LLM).

Funding details

Huygens scholarship

The Dutch government has allocated a vast amount for excellent students coming to the Netherlands under the HSP Huygens Programme. The Nuffic is administrating the Huygens scholarship. Please find all all necessary information about application and selection on their website.

! The Faculty deadline for receiving Huygens scholarship requests is: 31 December 2010. On the online application form please mention the Huygens scholarship request by thicking the relevant box.

The International Office will make a first selection of most excellent students. For this students we will write a nomination letter. Applicants that are part of this selection will receive the nomination letter by e-mail before 1 February 2011 which is the Nuffic deadline for application.

Amsterdam Merit Scholarship

The Faculty of Economics and Business provides a limited number of scholarships for excellent students in the Master's programmes. There is no fixed number of available scholarships. The actual number will be determined by the amount that will be allocated to the Faculty.

Selection procedure

1) Applicants should write an AMS motivation letter (tell us in not more than 300 words your motivation to get the scholarship).

2) Applicants should upload the AMS digital motivation letter to their online application for the MSc programme before March 1st 2011.

3) Before the end of May 2011 we will inform all applicants about the results by e-mail.

Ahold Scholarship Programme

Ahold, an international food retailing group based in the Netherlands offers scholarships for non-EU students in the MSc in Accountancy and Control programme. Applicants should have an outstanding academic record and have special interest in retail and the intention to work and live in the USA or Europe after graduation. All non-EU applicants accepted to the MSc in Accountancy and Control programme will receive supplementary information on this Scholarship.

Colfuturo Scholarship

Students from Columbia can apply for this scholarship through their website.

Ford Foundation Scholarship

Scholarships are provided for students from a selection of countries worldwide. For more information see the Nuffic website.

Netherlands Fellowship Programmes
