Location of University of Amsterdam
The track in Public International Law aims to provide a solid understanding of the general principles and structures of international law and to allow students to build expertise in a variety of areas of international law, including international criminal law and international economic law.
The programme allows students to combine their study of theoretical aspects of international law with its practical application, for instance by participating in the Amsterdam International Law Clinic or a moot court competition. The wide variety of elective courses allows students to design the programme to fit their individual interests and ambitions in international law.
Studying Public International Law at the University of Amsterdam
In addition to the core courses, many specialised courses on various aspects of public international law and European law are offered. The academic staff are highly qualified international and European lawyers. Students will become familiar with a wide range of international institutions and will receive guidance in finding internships and in identifying career opportunities once they have successfully completed the Master's programme.
Contents
The programme in Public International Law consists of:
- Core courses: 20 ECTS credits
- Electives: 30 ECTS credits
- Thesis: 10 ECTS credits
Students are expected to obtain 60 ECTS credits throughout the course of the degree.
Degree requirements
Upon completion of all programme requirements, students will receive a Master's degree in International and European Law, and the title Master of Laws (LLM).
Track
Public International Law is a track of the LLM programme in International and European Law.
Thesis
The Master's programme concludes with a thesis on a substantive issue in public international law (10 ECTS credits). Students will research and write the thesis under the supervision of their faculty adviser. The topic will be mutually agreed upon between the student and the adviser.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.

Educational background
Entry to the Master's programme depends on your academic background:
Academic background in law:
- An academic level comparable with a Dutch Bachelor of laws diploma.
- For the Master's programme International and European Law (any specialisation) a basic knowledge of Public International Law and European law is required. The Amsterdam Law School offers a deficiency course only in European Union Law. This course is provided by the Law School in September. Credits earned in this courses are not included in the required 60 ECTS credits. The Amsterdam Law School does not offer an deficiency course in Public International Law.
English language proficiency
A good command of the English language is a prerequisite. The Amsterdam Law School accepts the following tests:
- TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) - minimum score 100
- Cambridge International Examinations - minimum level C
- IELTS (International English Language Testing System - minimum score 7
The Amsterdam Law School only accepts English language proficiency test results that are no more than one year old at the time of application.
Please note: Before choosing a specific test, please consult the Dutch immigration authorities in your country for a confirmation concerning the validity of the English language proficiency test. In the case of China, for example, only the IELTS test is valid for immigration purposes.

Accreditation
The quality of this Master's programme has been positively assessed by the Accreditation Organisation of The Netherlands and Flanders (NVAO). This means that upon successful completion of the programme, students will receive a legally accredited Master's degree in International and European Law and the title Master of Laws (LLM).
Funding details
Huygens scholarship
The Dutch government has allocated a vast amount for excellent students coming to the Netherlands under the HSP Huygens Programme. The Nuffic is administrating the Huygens scholarship. Please find all all necessary information about application and selection on their website.
! The Faculty deadline for receiving Huygens scholarship requests is: 31 December 2010. On the online application form please mention the Huygens scholarship request by thicking the relevant box.
The International Office will make a first selection of most excellent students. For this students we will write a nomination letter. Applicants that are part of this selection will receive the nomination letter by e-mail before 1 February 2011 which is the Nuffic deadline for application.
Amsterdam Merit Scholarship
The Faculty of Economics and Business provides a limited number of scholarships for excellent students in the Master's programmes. There is no fixed number of available scholarships. The actual number will be determined by the amount that will be allocated to the Faculty.
Selection procedure
1) Applicants should write an AMS motivation letter (tell us in not more than 300 words your motivation to get the scholarship).
2) Applicants should upload the AMS digital motivation letter to their online application for the MSc programme before March 1st 2011.
3) Before the end of May 2011 we will inform all applicants about the results by e-mail.
Ahold Scholarship Programme
Ahold, an international food retailing group based in the Netherlands offers scholarships for non-EU students in the MSc in Accountancy and Control programme. Applicants should have an outstanding academic record and have special interest in retail and the intention to work and live in the USA or Europe after graduation. All non-EU applicants accepted to the MSc in Accountancy and Control programme will receive supplementary information on this Scholarship.

Ford Foundation Scholarship
Scholarships are provided for students from a selection of countries worldwide. For more information see the Nuffic website.
