In a globally competitive business environment, international managers must not only have a firm command of professional core competencies and management techniques, but also be able to deal with the intercultural particularities of different markets. This cultural sensitivity is necessary in order to act competently in the international market as well as for developing successful relationships, not only with employees, but also with customers and vendors from a variety of cultural backgrounds. The International Management program prepares students for this challenge. Building on the knowledge gained from their earlier degrees, they will acquire comprehensive professional skills and social competencies in three semesters plus the time spent writing their master’s thesis. They will receive all the professional knowledge and soft skills necessary to managing intercultural teams. In the process, students will hone their analytical thinking skills. The curriculum includes courses in Controlling, Financial Management, International Taxation and Law, and Marketing Management. Students also focus on foreign languages. In addition to attending lectures held in English, students take languages classes in French or Spanish. The study program can be completed entirely in English depending on the course of study. Depending on their choice of international university, students can expand their language proficiency. Students also gain hands-on work experience through the integrated internships. With this know-how, graduates will be qualified to take on middle to upper level management positions in any business area, but particularly in fields with an international dimension.
Double Degree
In cooperation with five partner universities abroad, the ISM offers Double Degree qualifications with a variety of focal areas. The Bond University in Australia offers ISM students the opportunity to earn an additional Master of Business, Master of International Hotel and Tourism Management or a Master of Business Administration degree. Students can also earn an additional M.Sc. International Business degree from Lancaster University in the UK (pending). Additionally, ISM students can supplement their ISM International Management degree with a M.Sc. International Business or M.Sc. Project Management degree from the ISM partner university INSEEC in Paris or a Master in International Business degree from TEC de Monterrey in Guadalajara, Mexico. A newly acquired partner university in the USA is the Boston University, offering a Master of Science in Administrative Studies with a choice of four specialized areas of interest.
The first semester reinforces and builds on students’ existing knowledge of business management and introduces them to specific facets of international management. In the module, Managing the International Enterprise, students examine the internal aspects of an international company, including strategies and processes as well as organization, leadership and change management. The seminar, Project Management, focuses on the management of international projects including the most important external political, legal, social and technological frameworks influencing international business. Students also take part in an international business game in the module, Quantitative Analysis & Decision-Making, wherein they learn about the complexities of international business decisions. In order to develop social, as well as professional, competencies, students receive training in executive presentations and team management skills. A Spanish or French language seminar rounds off their education during the first semester. Students who have not demonstrated adequate proficiency in English at the time of their application can participate in a summer language course prior to semester begin. All first semester courses are taught in English.
The second semester is designed to deepen the knowledge acquired in the integrative foundation semester. The modules, Applied Knowledge and Soft & Communication Skills, are therefore compulsory. The seminar, Management & Planning of Consulting Projects, demonstrates how consulting projects are acquired and structured on the basis of real business problems. The consequences on one’s own project management are also examined. In the module, Soft & Communication Skills, students further develop their intercultural communication skills and gather valuable negotiation experience on an international level. Students can then choose two of the three following modules: International Strategy & Business Development, International Marketing and International Controlling. Whereas students in the International Strategy & Business Development module focus on the development and implementation of business strategies and measures, students in the module International Marketing develop an advanced understanding of international marketing strategies, market research and statistics as well as customer relationship marketing. In the module, International Controlling, students critically examine the operative and strategic management of a company.
During their semester abroad, students further develop and strengthen their intercultural competence and improve their language skills in a region where they would like to work in the future. With this in mind, students can choose one of the ISM partner universities in Europe or overseas. There they will attend courses in topics such as Supply Chain Management, Investor Relations, Human Resource Management, Corporate Social Responsibility and Research Methods – all of which are grounded in the economic, political, and cultural conditions in their chosen geographic area. Those who opt to pursue a double degree attend the Bond University in Australia, Lancaster University in Great Britain (pending), INSEEC in Paris or Boston University in the US.
The program concludes with the successful completion of a master’s thesis. This is a research project with concrete practical applications. Students should formulate a thesis that is grounded in the knowledge gained during their first three semesters. In the process, students transfer general knowledge to specific problems, in order to solve concrete problems for companies or to answer research questions. Those completing a double degree at the Bond University return to the ISM to complete their master’s thesis. Students completing a double degree at the Lancaster University (pending) are required to complete their master’s thesis at the partner university. However, ISM students pursuing a double degree in cooperation with the INSEEC write their master’s thesis during a six-month internship in Germany or abroad. Double degree students attending TEC de Monterrey or Boston University return to the ISM to complete their master’s thesis.
