In recent decades global development has been charactised by major socio-economic and political changes. The MA in Global Development offers you critically informed debates on contemporary development issues, and the opportunity to challenge and contest mainstream ideas on global development.

You will develop the skills to undertake research in development, whether from a programme or advocacy perspective. You will be taught by experienced staff who are engaged in their field of study and whose latest research expertise informs their teaching.

This inter-disclipinary course is a well-established programme that attracts a large and diverse group of students from around the world. Many are mid-career professionals seeking time out to reflect; and others seek to take up a career within a government department, the non-government sector, the agency world or activism.

Global Development@Leeds An interdisclipinary research and teaching centre that draws on the expertise of more than 60 members, including researchers, advisers and consultants, from different Schools and Faculties at the University of Leeds.

The centre promotes academic excellence through generating knowledge on development issues in low-income countries and pursuing collaborative research with institutions in the developing world.

Consolidating this expertise through a broad network of experts throughout the University, we make best use of existing knowledge and interdisciplinary practice to inform our teaching.


Contents

Students taking the MA in Global Development have the opportunity to specialise in one of five pathways: Africa, Education, Gender, International Political Economy and Economy of Resources and Development.

The pathways reflect the particular research strengths in Global Development of the School and will be reflected in the degree certificate on graduation.

MA in Global Development offers a flexible, cross-disciplinary programme that combines core modules with a wide range of development-related optional modules listed below.

All programmes contain the following core modules:

* Development Theories, Strategies and Issues (30 credits)

* 12,000 word dissertation (60 credits; within pathway topic area for pathway specialisms)

MA Global Development also contains the following two compulsory modules:

* Development Management Techniques (15 credits)

* Research Methodology for Development (15 credits)

Each pathway contains its own additional core module:

* Africa: Africa in the Contemporary World (30 credits)

* Education: Education in Development (30 credits)

* Gender: Gender, Globalisation and Development (30 credits)

* International Political Economy: International Political Economy (30 credits)

* Politics of International Resources and Development: Political Economy of Resources and Development (30 credits)

To complete a total of 180 credits, all students then choose 2 module options from the following:

* Famine and Food Security

* Conflict, Complex Emergencies and Global Governance

* Democratisation and Multi-Party Politics in Africa

* Education in Development

* Gender, Globalisation and Development

* Democracy and Development

* Other Wars: Conflict in a Gendered Perspective

* The EU and the Developing World

* Environmental Politics and Policy

* Sustainable Security and Stability

* Democratic Theory and Political Transformation

* Political Economy of Resources and Development

IELTS

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.

Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.

Requirements

If you wish to apply for these programmes, you should normally hold a good honours degree (upper second class or first class) in a Social Science discipline, or an equivalent professional qualification. Relevant experience will be taken into account.
