The programme introduces students to the history of terrorism from state sponsored terrorists in the Cold War Period, urban terrorists in Western Europe in the 1970s, the IRA in Northern Ireland, to the emergence of radical Islam and Al Qaeda in the 1990s. It invites you to confront the hard dilemmas of preserving democratic liberties while developing effective counterterrorism strategies and assess the necessity for and the effectiveness of anti-terrorism legislation in Britain, the United States and other countries.
You will study the wider political context and the causes of radicalisation and terrorist violence including the analysis of the situation in Afghanistan and Pakistan, the war in Iraq as well as an in-depth study of the geopolitics of the Middle East.
The University of Leeds has internationally recognized expertise in security, international and domestic law, media studies, the sociology of radicalisation and weapons of mass destruction as they relate to terrorism.
As US President Obama takes office and a new approach to the challenge of terrorism is developing, practitioners can benefit from increasing their understanding of one of the most important issues affecting government and law enforcement.
