The first decade of the Twenty-First Century has witnessed a dramatic transformation of the political landscape of our world. The rise of international terrorism, the global financial crisis, deepening anxiety over the environment, new patterns of migration and associated fears of social and cultural fragmentation have all significantly altered political priorities.
This course provides you with a firm grounding in political analysis and a critical insight into the real politics behind the headlines.
You will gain first-hand experience of participation in a community of research-active scholars and you will develop outstanding skills in research, team-working and presentation.
Our innovative, research-based pathways and modules provide students with the opportunity to work in collaboration with research-active academics and to contribute meaningfully to our lively research culture.
You may also choose to tailor your degree to suit your specific interests by pursuing one of our specialist pathways in Political Theory or Parliamentary studies. The Parliamentary pathway includes a semester-long internship in a Member of Parliament's office. During the placement, you will engage with the full range of office-support and research work undertaken in an MP's office.
The course provides an excellent grounding for those seeking to launch careers in a range of related areas such as media, civil service, NGOs, Trades Unions and academia.It is also ideally suited to students wishing to develop the skills necessary to pursuea PhD in Politics.

The MA in Politics offers a flexible, cross-disciplinary programme that combines core modules with a wide range of politics-related optional modules.

MA Politics Pathways Students taking the MA in Politics have the opportunity to specialise in one of two pathways: Parliamentary or Political Theory. The pathways reflect the particular research strengths in Politics of the School and will be stated on the degree certificate on graduation. Each specialised pathway contains its own additional core modules.

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.

Take testIf you wish to apply for these programmes, you should normally hold a good honours degree (upper second class or first class) in a Social Science discipline, or an equivalent professional qualification. Relevant experience will be taken into account.
