CoMEM

The Erasmus Mundus Master Course in Coastal and Marine Engineering and Management, is a two-year English taught international Master’s programme, in which five high-rated European universities participate. During the course students familiarise themselves with key issues involved in providing sustainable, environmentally friendly, legally and economically acceptable solutions to various problems in the CoMEM field.

Programme

During the programme, students study at universities in three different countries. Students spend the first semester in Trondheim, Norway, the second semester in Delft, the Netherlands; during the third semester in the second year, students choose a specialization, either in Barcelona (Spain), London (UK) or Southampton (UK). Semester 4 is devoted to doing the MSc thesis at one of the three universities previously visited.

All participating universities have long-standing relations with the industry, public works administrations and research and education institutes. Studying in different European countries will enable students to meet and work with professionals from various backgrounds and to gather knowledge on a wide range of issues involved; they will also get a comprehensive EU perspective on CoMEM related issues. This will help students to develop a coherent and integrated approach that is applicable to a more global perspective as well.

Why study Coastal and Marine Engineering and Management?

The coast and the coastal seas offer unique resources to mankind and to mother earth and the majority of the world population lives, works and recreates in coastal areas. But even in wealthy countries, the coastal zones are vulnerable.

Several natural hazards have recently illustrated this: cyclone Nargis in Birma (Myanmar) in May 2008 causing distrastous flooding, the frequent hurricane events in the Caribbean and North America, including Hurricane Katrina (2005) and the Indian Ocean earthquake and associated tsunami hazards (2004). UNESCO has projected that low-lying coastal and deltaic regions will experience an increase in population density of 50% by 2050, indicating the important challenges that we face in terms of promoting development without more disasters.

This is especially important given that coastal areas will experience significant climate change and sea level rise. All CoMEM partners are involved in the range of measures required to evaluate these diverse coastal hazards and the possible mitigation measures. The CoMEM programme is designed to educate a new generation of professionals. Professionals who are able to tackle these diverse challenges and, in doing so, will reduce the vulnerability of our marine and coastal systems and promote sustainable development of these areas.

  • Marine physical environment
  • Spreading of pollution

Optional:

  • Dynamic response to irregular loadings
  • Theoretical soil mechanics
  • Transport systems
  • Energy and environmental physics

This semester comprises coursework only.

Second semester

A 'Winter School' will be held in Delft offering discussions and information about the education programme, field and laboratory visits and a specific introductory course (with Capita Selecta) on the specializations on offer at Barcelona, London and Southampton. During the second semester you´ll be offered the following subjects.

Compulsory:

  • Introduction to coastal zone management
  • Multidisciplinary project
  • Philosophy and ethics for civil engineers
  • Integrated coastal zone management

Optional:

  • Computational modelling of flow and transport
  • Dredging technology
  • Probabilistic design

This semester offers coursework and project work.

Third semester

You will spend your third semester either in Barcelona, Southampton or London, depending on the specialization you chose.

Environmental & Engineering specialization

Location: Technical University of Catalonia, Barcelona, Spain
Compulsory:

  • Impacts, conflicts and risks
  • Coastal protection
  • Numerical and hydraulic modelling

Optional:

  • Marine climate
  • Coastal morphodynamics
  • Minor thesis

This semester comprises course work and an individual minor thesis.

Environmental & Management specialization

Location: University of Southampton, Southampton, UK

  • Coastal and maritime engineering
  • Geographic information systems
  • Environmental audit and risk assessment
  • Coastal morphodynamics

This semester offers a mix of course work, field & laboratory classes and hands on studio work.

Business & Management specialization

Location: City University London, London, UK

  • Maritime operations
  • Maritime law and insurance
  • Maritime technology
  • Finance, accounting and economics
  • Management studies (human resources, crisis and risk)

This semester comprises course work and presentations.

Fourth and final semester

The fourth semester is designed for doing your thesis work. Depending on whether you want to further specialize or broaden your CoMEM knowledge, you can chose to stay at your third semester university or return to either Delft or Trondheim. You can do your thesis work at a university, a knowledge institution, a governmental institution or at a company.

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.

Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
