From the industrial molecular to the macroscopic

Engineers in chemical and materials sciences can be defined as specialists of industrial processes involving a physico-chemical transformation of matter.

Their work consists of transposing to the industrial level the phenomena which generally occur in the laboratory in to take advantage of them on a large scale. In order to use materials judiciously they have to have in depth knowledge of the relationships between them, at the atomic level as much as at the level of their properties and their behaviour.

The chemical industry: a gigantic field of applications

The role of the engineer is paramount in the chemical industry. This state of the art industry in effect looks to make the most of the new raw materials emerging from the world of research by creating new products. That is why it constitutes a very significant and constantly increasing source of jobs

It offers an engineer in chemical and in materials sciences a large range of careers: the design of new installations in engineering and design departments, the construction and starting up of new factories, exploitation of production workshops and, increasingly, research and development work. In effect the chemical and para-chemical industries devote a greater percentage of their turnover to research than every other industry. This observation could be extended to all the material transformation industries, notably the industries linked to the fabrication of metal materials in constant transformation given the more and more marked diversification of the building materials in terms of application.

Gain mode knowledge

The education programme devised at the University of Liège takes into account the specificity and the plurality of the tasks of the engineer in chemical and materials sciences. Thus the study curriculum strives to establish a balance between a general education in the arts of the engineer and a specialised education in chemical sciences, in engineering and in materials sciences.

Career opportunies

Whether the Masters taken is with Research Focus or with Professional Focus, the professional openings offered to the engineer in chemical and materials sciences are varied and numerous.

  • chemical industry (notably the mineral, petrochemical and polymer materials industries) - - refinery treatment processes
  • energy transformation (combustion, gasification, fuel processing)
  • cement industry
  • glass industry
  • lime industry
  • metallurgical industry
  • steel industry
  • automobile industry
  • site clean up techniques (water purification and treatment of water to make it
  • drinkable, treating gaseous effluents)
  • agrobusiness
  • pharmacy (chemical engineering section)...

The student can choose between 2 options:

  • Master with research focus
  • Master with professional focus in Management

Contents

120 credits - 24 months

After a common trunk programme of 12 months, students have to choose either a professional or a research focus.

In both cases, the final thesis is the major part of work since it offers students the opportunity of being faced with the realities of Research and Development, a key area in the chemical and materials industry.

Masters with research focus : 30 credits allow the student to choose between 2 possible options:

- Process engineering (Sustainable development: energy and the environment; environment and safety; Biotechnology, Processes, advanced chemistry and formulation, materials sciences;
- Materials (Materials sciences, metallic materials, fabrication and recycling of materials, materials forming, characterisation of materials).

Masters with a professional focus in management :

All the civil engineering education programmes, with the exception of biomedical engineering, can be combined with a specialised education in management jointly organised with the HEC-ULg management school. In this case 30 credits of technical training are replaced with 30 credits devoted to business company management. This combination, unique in the French Speaking Community of Belgium, is an ULg exclusive. This programme has been specifically designed to allow students to pass as quickly as possible from learning basic notions to understanding how business works!

Based on a participative teaching practice, this education enables you to acquire solid basics in finance, strategy, marketing, human resource management, organisation, leadership, and production and supply chain management. You are placed in real situations: you go straight into the business in order to analyse how it functions and to carry out a diagnosis and a business plan for it.Finally, courses specific to the outcome in question are for the most part given in English. This outcome allows you to reorient your career differently according to the opportunities you come across, all the while being equipped with the skills expected of a civil engineer. It in this way responds to strong demand on the part of businesses in terms of the profile of future graduates.

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.

Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.

Requirements

If you have completed less than 3 years of studies, you will be admitted into the bachelor courses (1st cycle), meaning you will be subject to the same legal requirements as for a 1st-year registration: equivalency, French language exam, selection process.

For an admission at the master level (2nd cycle): you must hold a bachelor-level degree, earned after 3 years of study (180 credits/ECTS). However, it is not impossible that the jury, depending on your background, will require that you enter bachelor courses, in which case you will be subject to the same requirements as other students at this level.

Knowledge of French: your application must include a French language certificate indicating a minimum level of B2 (or, for a programme offered in English, an English language certificate indicating a minimum level of B1). If your application is accepted for bachelor courses, you must also pass the French exam organised at the University.

Additional Requirements

Minimal degree required: Bachelor's degree
Minimal amount of work experience Not specified
