All candidates will take six semester-length courses (or their equivalent). These normally consist of 3 compulsory courses.
Core courses:
Research Skills in the Social Sciences: Data Collection
Core Quantitative Data Analysis for Social Research
Research Design
and three further courses selected from the following skills courses and a range of substantive courses from across the social sciences. The availability of courses can vary from year to year.
Students have the option of a dissertation carried out in a workplace for that specific purpose. The aim of the placement-based dissertation is to provide students with the opportunity to work on their dissertation within the context of a workplace of their choosing, which could be within a public sector, a voluntary, a charitable or a private organisation, subject to the approval of the Programme Director.

Alastair Bowden graduated in November 2009 and is now working at the Scottish Government as a Research Officer.
Judith Mabelis recently graduated with an MSc in Social Research and has recently started work at Scottish Centre for Social Research in Edinburgh.
Tania Smith came to us in September 2007 and graduated in November 2009 with a distinction. She completed the MSc in Social Research on a part time basis, whilst working full-time. She has since secured ESRC PhD funding.

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
Take testYou should have the equivalent of a 2:1 (a B+) in your undergraduate degree, which should be in a social science discipline. Non-standard entry routes are also taken into consideration, so do ask the Programme Director if you are unsure. If your first degree is not examined in English, you will need to reach 6.5 IELTS score. See for the most recent information.

This degree is recognised for Research Training (RT) by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) and is eligible for funding from the ESRC 1+3 doctoral support for those intending to continue to a PhD. These competitive awards are available to UK and EU students (the latter for fees only).
The Open Societies Foundation also recognises this degree as eligible for their grant scheme.
