The MSc Economics aims to provide students with a thorough knowledge and understanding of the concepts, tools and methods of modern economics together with the application of these methods to the analysis of economic problems.

The programme is designed not only to equip students to undertake independent research in economics, but also to provide the training necessary for careers as economists in the public and the private sector.

The MSc Economics provides advanced training in economic analysis, and offers a wide range of optional subjects. It offers students the opportunity to study particular areas of economics in greater depth, from both a theoretical and an empirical perspective.

What You Might Be Doing After You Graduate, Your Prospects And Opportunities A Diploma or MSc in Economics can be an immediate door opener into many fields, and can lead to a broad range of career choices and opportunities.

The programme is full-time, and lasts for twelve months, with nine months of taught modules between October and June of the academic year, followed by three months of supervised research on a Master's dissertation. The programme starts with a two week intensive course in mathematical and statistical methods to ensure that students have the requisite knowledge to undertake graduate level courses in economic theory and econometrics.

Modules are assessed by examination at the end of each semester. Some of the modules include assessed coursework which is combined with the examination mark to produce a final grade. If you fail to reach the required standard in the examinations or if you decide not to proceed to write a dissertation then you may be awarded a Diploma.

The final three months of the programme are spent on the preparation of a Master's dissertation, to be completed by the end of September. The topic for research is chosen with the advice and guidance of members of the academic staff, with supervision provided by a member of Economics staff with related research interests.

You can expect to enjoy predominantly small-group teaching, and a considerable degree of individual attention from members of staff. MSc students are strongly encouraged to attend seminars and research workshops in the Division. The MSc students usually form a lively and cohesive group which plays an active role in the academic and social life of the Division.
