This ESRC-accredited programme offers advanced conceptual and methodological training in sociological analysis. In addition to providing you with the skills to conduct research in a variety of professional contexts, it also provides an excellent basis for PhD studies.

The course will enable you to formulate research questions in specific research contexts; select and use appropriate methods of data collection and analysis; manipulate and critically evaluate key concepts and issues; and present results in a systematic way.

It will provide you with the opportunity to explore particular areas of interest in your specialist modules (from a range of options reflecting key areas of staff interest and expertise) and in your dissertation, and also explores the ethical, political and social contexts in which research is framed and conducted.

Aims and objectives The aims of this programme are to provide you with:

* an in-depth understanding of classical and contemporary themes and debates within Sociology and of their application in the analysis of selected social issues
* a knowledge of key issues within the philosophy of social science and the ability to apply this knowledge in the design and practice of social research
* a knowledge of the techniques of data analysis utilised within the social sciences and their application
* a knowledge of the principal methods of qualitative and quantitative research utilised within the social sciences, and an understanding of their application in different contexts
* the ability to design and conduct independent research within the field of sociology, utilising appropriate research methodologies, and grounded within an understanding of the process of research management and ethical and legal issues associated with the conduct of social research
* the capacity to present ideas, arguments and research findings through different means of communication

After graduation A postgraduate qualification in sociology or social policy leads to a broad range of career choices and opportunities.

Contents

Full-time students take three modules (or equivalent) per semester. Part-time students take three modules in year one, and three in year two.

Semester one and semester two modules

* Understanding modernity
* Understanding social change
* Project one and Project two (to be chosen from a range of options)
* Philosophy, methodology and research design
* Qualitative methods
* The design and statistical analysis of surveys

Semester three

Once you have successfully completed your taught modules, you carry out a piece of independent research to be written up as a 15,000-word dissertation. Full-time students submit the dissertation by the end of September of that year; part-time students normally submit the dissertation by the end of the following December.

IELTS

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.

Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.

We welcome applications from students with a first- or second-class honours degree (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline (such as sociology, social policy, social administration or criminology).

English language requirements
If your first language or language of education is not English, we will ask you to show evidence of fluency in the use of English. For all of our postgraduate programmes we require a level of IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL 580 (CBT - 237, IBT - 92). If you require further English language tuition before commencing your programme with us, you may apply for one of our pre-sessional English language courses which are run by the Centre for Language Study.
