Christie's Education and Glasgow University have been associated with each other for over 20 years. We share the same commitment to providing the highest quality education in art history. This is a full-time postgraduate degree providing an education that will open up pathways into a range of careers in the art world, and can also lead to further post-graduate study.
This innovative new course is unique in the UK in offering a Master's qualification entirely in the Arts of China. It is designed for students who wish to gain a thorough knowledge of the Arts of China while acquiring experience in artefact analysis, cataloguing, reporting and writing about works of art for which the Christie's Master's programme is famous. Students have their own core lecture programme which covers the art of China from 1700 BC to the nineteenth century. They join other master's students for seminars on critical theory and museology.
You will produce written work that ranges from analytical writing to exhibition reviews and curatorial reports. You will be introduced to museum and auction house systems for classifying objects and study different models of museum and gallery display. A unique feature of the programme is that the Master's Thesis takes the form of a proposed exhibition catalogue. Above all, the course aims to stimulate critical awareness, engendering a creative and informed understanding of art and the art world.
Contents
Most of the teaching at Christie's Education is done through small tutorial groups. Each student will be assigned a tutor who will supervise their work and assess their progress over the year. Supervision will be provided individually for thesis planning and course work. Study trips both in the UK and abroad are an integral part of the courses and are not charged as extras.
Coursework is assessed through a system of component credits. To qualify for the award of the MLitt degree, students must successfully achieve the appropriate standard in a range of work. In addition to regular written assignments and seminar presentations, students sit the professional cataloguing examination where they are required to catalogue a range of objects, taken directly from the sale room, to Christie's Auction House standards. The main academic piece of work is the thesis, which take the form of an exhibition catalogue and is carried out individually by the student under the supervision of their tutor. This critical piece of work is designed to enable students to display all the key academic and professional skills learned on the programme.

* The establishment of lacquer, silk, jade and painting traditions.
* Buddhist art in China from the Han to the Tang dynasties.
* The Silk Road; the international status of ceramics, precious metals, paper making and printing.
* The Golden Age of the Song dynasty; ceramics, painting, calligraphy, lacquer and sculpture.
* Antiquarianism under the Song dynasty.
* Artistic influence of foreign rulers under the Liao and Yuan dynasties on painting and calligraphy.
* The rise of Jingdeshen: China´s major porcelain centre.
* The reestablishment of Chinese rule under the Ming dynasty.
* Imperial patronage on court and religious art, imperial academies and ateliers.
* Western influence on Chinese art and the export of China goods.
* Artistic influence of the three great Qing emperors.
Course Components
* Core lecture series 1700 BC - AD 1799: underpins all components of the programme.
* Study Trips: an international trip to China supplements regular visits to museums and collections throughout the year and is included in the basic fee.
* Object-based study is central to our teaching: training relevant to the public and commercial art worlds; practical and research based study of materials and techniques, scientific analysis, style, dating, quality and authenticity.
* Cataloguing to auction house and museum standards: handling sessions, warehouse and museum visits; professional cataloguing exam.
* Gallery and Curatorial Studies: engage with current debates about curating and devise fresh approaches to the display of art works. Explore practices in art criticism developing skills to review exhibitions and produce reports.
* Culture and Ideology Seminars: the relationship between specific objects and broader debates around ancient and modern Chinese art are discussed in small groups. Students acquire the skills to deliver presentations and generate seminar discussion.
* Methodology Seminars: the analysis of technical, art-historical and interpretative texts which provide transferable skills for independent research and individual development.
* Thesis: your opportunity to create an exhibition on a small group of objects, independently researched and catalogued, where the key academic and professional skills learned on the programme are utilised.
IELTS
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.

This course is open to all students with a university education although preference will be given to those with a degree in the History of Art.
We welcome applications from mature students who have experience or knowledge of art, but may not have graduated in art history. No prior knowledge of the culture and language of China is required. It is hoped that a wide range of graduates will apply for this course, including those trained in other areas of art history. Non English speaking students must have IELTS 8 or equivalent.
