Location of Tampere University of Technology

During the last 40 years the School of Architecture has aimed to provide students with a broad general understanding of the fundamentals of architecture on which to build their special expertise, already during the programme and later on throughout their careers.
The Master's Programme in Architecture leads to the Master of Science in Architecture degree (M.Sc.(Arch.)). The degree is intended for students who plan to practice architecture professionally and it qualifies them to work as an architect in Finland. After completing this degree, the student is eligible to directly apply for doctoral degree programme.


Contents

The Master’s Programme in Architecture consists of four terms of full-time study. In the degree 90 credits (three semesters) are composed of mandatory and elective course work of professional MSc Studies, Major subject and Elective studies and 30 credits (one semester) of the Master’s thesis. The last term of the two years master’s programme is dedicated to the design and development of a thesis project.

Professional MSc Studies in Architecture (48 credits)

The Professional MSc Studies in Architecture aim at offering the students a strong ground of professional skills in architecture and orientating students towards the Major subject.

Major subject, Architectural studies (30 credits)

A studio course of yearly varying theme from the field of Architecture that is taught by yearly changing visiting professor. The Course is an intensive course on the second year’s fall semester. Students are able to do the course assignment in according to their interest, so for example a student with interest in Architectural Design could emphasize the design skills she/he has in the assignment.

Elective studies (12 credits)

More freely chosen studies of the curriculum including optional choices in Finnish and English language studies, computer aided design and visualization skills and studies in Finnish architecture.

Master's thesis (30 credits)

The thesis is an individual and self- defined architectural project which aim is to prove the student can practice the profession of architect.

Workload

The total scope of the Master's Degree Programme in Architecture is 120 credits. The credits are based on the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System which is a student-centered system based on the student workload required to achieve the objectives of a course. Each credit represents the average workload of 27 hours.

Learning environment

The whole programme is taught completely in English. The quality of teaching in the programme is high as teaching is offered by staff members that are also pursue research and are active in architect’s profession. This ensures that students have access to the most up-to-date knowledge, which is important in today's fast changing work environment. The school of Architecture has project-based approach to learning in most courses in which the course assignment work are in most cases stranded in real-life situations and problems. Students learn by sharing a studio and exchanging ideas with fellow students. Students work on individual projects, developed in close dialogue with professor, assistants and fellow students. The projects are reviewed in critique sessions where students present their work explaining their approach to the assignment and the underlying idea behind the assignment project.

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.

Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.

Requirements

Educational Qualifications

The applicant must have a 3 or 4 years Bachelor's degree in the field of architecture from an internationally recognized university, primarily of those architecture schools listed in the directive of the European Parliament and council 2005/36/EC. Students in their final year of undergraduate education may also apply, if they graduate before the end of July 2011.

Language skills

The official language of the programme is English. Therefore, a good command in English language is an absolute prerequisite, which must be demonstrated with one of the following language tests:

TOEFL (minimum score 92 in the internet-based or 580 in paper-based test)
In TOEFL Registration Form, please use the Tampere University of Technology’s Institution Code 0599 in the Score Report Recipient field. The testing centre must send the test result directly to Tampere University of Technology; applicant's copies will not be accepted.

IELTS (minimum score 6.5)
Paper copy of an IELTS score slip is accepted. IELTS can also be sent to TUT from the testing center. TUT verifies IELTS test results from the test organizer.
Cambridge Language Certificate (Proficiency CPE or Advanced CAE) (min. grade "C")

Portfolio

A portfolio is required of all applicants. Maximum paper size is A3 (297x420 mm)

Fees

All students must be able to cover personal living and housing expenses, cost of literature, travel, insurance, etc. in Finland. (The total monthly living expenses of a single student average around 700 €.) When applying for the student residence permit, you need to show the Finnish authorities that you have enough funding to support your everyday living expenses in Finland. Currently, non-EU/EEA citizens are required to show that they have at least 6000€ per year at their disposal annually.

Funding details

TUT offers the students a first-rate academic education free of charge, and therefore we do not have a scholarship system for students. You may be eligible to apply for some "study abroad" scholarships in your home country, and from international organizations and foundations.
