The International Master of Science in Finance offers you the possibility of becoming an expert in the highly demanding Finance field.

CATÓLICA-LISBON has been offering for more than 6 years the post-experience Master in Finance, the only CFA Program partner in Portugal. This is the leading program in Portugal in this area, with a very strong reputation both among candidates and corporations. Now CATÓLICA-LISBON is also launching a pre-experience International Master of Science in Finance, which will allow you to prepare for a consistent career in Finance. Based on CATÓLICA-LISBON past experience, the program is designed to allow you to obtain CFA 1 certification at the end of the first year and CFA 2 certification shortly after concluding your Master degree. The International MSc degree in Finance from CATÓLICA-LISBON, jointly with the CFA certifications, are crucial elements to build a very consistent CV, oriented for a strong career in Finance.

Contents

Courses are divided into specific topics and you get to choose the courses you think are more suitable for your profile. The International MSc in Finance requires 120 ECTS:

Coursework Phase 78 ECTS

  • Core Courses in Finance 31.5 ECTS
  • General Business Foundation Courses, between 10.5 ECTS and 14 ECTS or
  • or General Economics and Quantitative Foundation Courses 23.5 ECTS
  • Finance Electives minimum of 7 ECTS
  • Free Electives between 10 and 26 ECTS
  • Third Language Language Requirement Between 4 and 8 ECTS
    (waived for studentsthat choose the General Economics Foundation Courses)
  • Leadership Lab between 3 and 6 ECTS

The International MSc in Finance is four semester long.

General Courses in Finance

These courses assure an appropriate preparation in the main areas in Finance includind both theory and standard applications:

  • Financial Investments (7 ECTS)
  • Advanced Corporate Finance (7 ECTS)
  • Firm Valuation (3.5 ECTS)
  • Financial Modeling (3.5 ECTS)
  • Financial Derivatives (3.5 ECTS)
  • Risk Management (3.5 ECTS)
  • International Finance (3.5 ECTS)

General Business Foundations Courses or

These courses are designed to consolidate your integrated view of the firm and its environment. Students must complete a minimum of 10.5 ECTS between General Business Foundation Courses and Business Administration Electives.

  • Business Ethics and Social Responsibility (3.5 ECTS) or Ethics and CFA standards (3.5 ECTS)
  • Management Control Systems
  • Managing People in Organizations
  • Strategfic Management

Note: The Ethics course is mandatory. The remaining courses can be waived based on previous academic experience.

or General Economics Foundations Courses or

These courses are designed to give you a solid foundation in Economics as a basis for your specialization in Finance.

  • Ethics and Social Responsibility (3.5 ECTS) or Ethics and CFA standards (3.5 ECTS)
  • Advanced Microeconomics (8 ECTS)
  • Advanced Microeconomics (4 ECTS)

and Quantitative Requirement

Advanced Econometrcis (8 ECTS)

Financial Electives: minimum of 7 ECTS

Finance Electives allow students to design their master according to their career perspectives and to specialize in specific areas in Finance. To obtain the International Master of Science in Finance students are required to complete a minimum of 7 ects in Finance electives.

Electives in Economics allow students to design their master according to their career perspectives and to reinforce their Economics foundations. Students choosing the General Economics Foundations Courses must complete 3,5 ects in this group. All non-finance courses offered in the MSc in Economics qualify as Economics electives. The following are representative examples of those courses:

Exchange Semester

To obtain the International Master of Science in Finance students must fulfill the following requirements:

  • Complete International Finance as a mandatory course,
  • Complete at least 21 ects during the mandatory exchange semester,
  • Third Language requirement (different from English and home language): between 4 and 8 ects (waived for students that choose the General Economics Foundation Courses)

Leadership Lab

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.

Requirements

First cycle degree equivalent to 180 ECTS. Transcript of records confirming academic qualifications (Portuguese or English).

For application purposes we do not require a formal certificate from your School, but we do require a non official document with ALL the courses you attended and its grades (You may print this information from your students' personal webpage).

We will require a formal certificate after completing your degree and no later than November (for September intake) and April (for February intake).

Curriculum Vitae

Certified proof of english proficiency:

  • TOEFL (recommended score): 600 (PBT), 250 (CBT), or 100 (IBT)
  • IELTS: (recommended score): 7.0
  • CAE: a minimum of C
  • or take the CATÓLICA-LISBON English Test

GMAT or CATÓLICA-LISBON Admission Test for applicants with a background different from Business and Economics.

Please note that your degree should have at least 50% of quantitaive courses.
The admission jury may request this exam from applicants with a background in management or economics if they decide that is justifiable
