The Subject Mathematical Finance
Mathematical Finance concerns the mathematical and economic modelling and analysis of financial markets and financial instruments. A core area focuses on the analysis of risks, such as liquidity, loss and market risks and their effects on the evaluation of securities and firms. Further questions relate to the incentives of the managers, investors and traders involved and how this financial world should be regulated.
Curriculum and Contents
The Master´s programme has a standard duration of study of four semesters and is organized into modules to the value of 120 ECTS credits.
Teaching covers the first three semesters and the fourth semester is reserved for the completion of the Master´s thesis.
Courses take place in English and German. The instructor decides on the language of instruction.
In the field of mathematics, the following compulsory modules are taken:
* Theory and Numerics of Partial Differential Equations (9 ECTS credits)
* Time Series Analysis (9 ECTS credits)
* Stochastics III (9 ECTS credits)
* Numerics of Stochastic Differential Equations (5 ECTS credits)
In the field of economics, the following compulsory modules are completed:
* Financial Econometrics (8 ECTS credits)
* International Finance (6 ECTS credits)
* Internal Accounting and Controlling (5 ECTS credits)
* Portfolio Management (6 ECTS credits)
* Risk Management (8 ECTS credits).
In the interdisciplinary field, optional modules to the value of 25 ECTS credits are taken. All Master´s courses of the Department of Economics and the Department of Mathematics can be selected, which do not belong to the above-mentioned modules.
Furthermore, two seminars, each to the value of 5 ECTS credits, must be completed. The seminars are selected from those offered by the Department of Economics and the Department of Mathematical and Statistics.
In the final semester, the four-month Master´s thesis (20 ECTS credits) is written.
The method of instruction of the compulsory and optional modules is usually a lecture and a tutorial. The method of examination of the compulsory and optional modules is generally a one or two hour written examination towards the end of the semester. Part of the final grade can compose of examinations taken during the course of the module. The examination method of the seminars is usually a presentation and a paper.
The Master´s examination comprises the examination results of the compulsory and optional modules, the seminar results and the Master´s thesis.
After the successful completion of the Master´s thesis, the degree of Master of Science in Mathematical Finance is awarded by the University of Konstanz.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.

* An above-average Bachelor´s degree from a recognized university with a standard duration of study of three years in economics (esp. mathematical finance), mathematics or in the natural sciences.
* Knowledge of analysis, linear algebra, stochastics or numerics (at least 30 ECTS credits).
* Knowledge of statistics, econometrics or economics (at least 20 ECTS credits).
* Evidence of sufficient proficiency in English, provided by one of the following language tests: * Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English or Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English: minimum Grade C.
* International English Language Testing System (IELTS): at least Band 6.
* Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL): at least 80 points (internet-based), 213 points (computer-based) or 550 points (paper-based). Our Institutional Code is 8971 and our Department Code is 84
* Alternatively: proof of one semester of study in English.

* For applicants without the German secondary school leaving certificate ("Abitur"): proof of German knowledge via one of the following language tests: * "Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang" (DSH): at least "Stufe 1"
* "Test für Deutsch als Fremdsprache" (TestDAF): at least "Stufe 3" in all 4 areas.
