Genetics is both an essential tool for the study and comprehension of many biological mechanisms (developmental biology, immunology, biodiversity, evolution, oncology, ...) and a discipline in itself. The aim of this genetics degree is to train geneticists able to contribute a genetics approach to biology laboratories as well as to undertake genetics research.

Therefore, the course content is designed to give students methodological and conceptual expertise in different fields of genetics, mainly:

* analysis of genomes, their evolution, their expression and their maintenance
* genetics of complexe characters, search for genes which cause a predisposition for diseases, use of animal models
* genetic diversity: origin, evolution, use
* developmental genetics
* cellular genetics of cancer

Competence
Discipline-specific skills:
* Have a thorough knowledge of biology in general and specialized knowledge in certain disciplinary fields
* Master the basic techniques and the equipment used in molecular biologyn biochemistry and cellular biology
* Know how to apply them in the different disciplines of biology
* Know how to set up and run experiments

General skills:

* Know how to manage bibliographical resources (databases, online scientific journals, ...) and master the scientific literature related to the relevant field of biology
* Be able to summarize
* Know how to do a critical analysis of scientific results
* Know how to use own knowledge and be creative to identify and then resolve a scientific problem
* Be able to learn and to adapt
* Know how to organize work and work in a team
* Know how to communicate results (oral presentation, posters, written reports) and defending a project against detractors
* appreciating the quality and pertinence of a study or a scientific approach
* mastering scientific English (certified level B2).

Opportunities
The specialization can lead to positions in basic and applied public research, particularly in medical laboratories which focus on human genetics and oncology, in food industry laboratories and working on animals of economic significance. It also leads directly to private research positions in biotechnology companies.

Contents

Two main courses are offered:

- "Research and genetics":

within this course there are five options offered; students are oriented towards one of these options at the end of their M1 according to their personal career plan. The specialized papers attached to each of these options are:

* Genetics of mice (Pasteur class)
* Molecular and cellular genetics (Pasteu class)
* Genetics of complex characters
* Genome analysis (Pasteur class)
* Molecular biology of RNA

- "Genetics and biodiversity management":

A more vocational course, which trains scientists in operational mastery of the methodology for the study and management of biodiversity.

Requirements

This degree specialization is aimed at students from the scientific and medical streams of UPMC and other universities with equivalent courses. Course capacity is limited to about 60 students per year.

Admissions
Students must have basic training in the fields of classic and molecular genetics, equivalent to that offered in UPMC´s Bachelor of Life Sciences. Medical students must follow a specific catch up module in S2 before beginning the M2. Students from grandes écoles and engineering schools may be exempt from M1, depending on their individual profile.
