The "Re-education and Medical Engineering" (RIM) major of UPMC´s Master of Science and Technology, formerly "Re-education, Re-adaptation, Rehabilitation" offering three specializations, was expanded at the start of the 2009 academic year with a fourth specialization which covers the field of medical engineering.

Consequently, the RIM Master´s has two complementary goals:

* to train new health professionals who are able to master and develop common interdisciplinary concepts. The major intends to meet a strong demand from students and young professionals who wish to participate in the scientific development of their field, to gain new cross-cutting skills and to innovate.
* to make the medical disciplines and engineering converge, giving students a double expertise and the possibility to contribute to the development of the medical technology of the future.

Opportunities
The Master´s degree leads to careers in teaching, management and technical applications in the health sector, and the following professions in particular:

"Re-education, Re-adaptation and Rehabilitation" Orientation (3R)

* Teacher
* Coordinator of first-year and continuing education vocational courses
* Technical Advisor in health services (social and sanitary), public or private sector
* Education Consultant in rehabilitation for administrations, public or private bodies.
* Project manager/consultant in the health and disabilities field for the Ministry of Education.
* Manager of health risk prevention/education or ergonomics in local authorities, companies and associations for children, people with disabilities, chronic illness, etc.
* Consultant for networks (Alzheimer´s, Autism, Diabetes, Pain, Gerontology, Sight-impaired, Myopathy, Parkinson´s, Perinatal, etc.)
* Planning, ergonomics and environment expert.

"Medical Engineering" Orientation (IM)

* This is a vocational course with practical papers as well as general papers and a long-term (4-6 month) internship in a hospital or medical instrumentation company.
* The course gives students the instrumental scientific and technological knowledge needed for patient care, and the skills needed for professionalism in the health industry.
* Research and development in medical instrumentation
* Operational marketing for medical instrumentation
* Hospital engineer
* Clinical studies assistant
* Medical imaging engineer
* Robotic systems engineer

Contents

The M1 is organized around two programs: Re-education, Re-adaptation and Rehabilitation (3R) and Medical Engineering (IM).

The "Re-education, Re-adaptation and Rehabilitation" program (3R)

This program is aimed primarily at health professionals who are reorienting towards the development, consulting, management and applied research professions in the fields of re-education, re-adaptation and rehabilitation, with a desire to move closer to the fundamental and clinical scientific fields.

The course trains students to assimilate and develop knowledge generated by the practice of re-education, re-adaptation and rehabilitation. These practices, at all stages of life and at all levels of integration (from systems to the subject), aim to optimize available and latent physical capacities and attenuate persistent physical difficulties in individuals.

The M1 papers constitute a refresher course in the necessary disciplines so that students can understand the different fields of the major and its four M2 specializations.

The "Medical Engineering" program (IM)

This program accepts Bachelor of Science graduates or equivalent in life or health sciences (candidates from the medical and pharmaceutical streams having completed three years of study). It is also open to professionals who wish to consolidate or acquire skills which supplement their professional experience.

The IM meets the societal demand associated with the increase in life expectancy that will lead to a significant increase in health expenditures and a significant burden to society and individuals. One measure which will help overcome these difficulties is to increase prevention, security and assistance to individuals, which opens new horizons in the industrial sector.

The aim is to make the medical disciplines and engineering converge, giving students a double expertise and the possibility to contribute to the development of the medical technology of the future.

Recent developments in scientific knowledge in the micro- and nanotechnology fields, the dissemination of information and communication technology throughout Europe and the increase in high-performance instrumentation for medical activities all affect health professionals. The implementation of new diagnostic techniques, combined with the set up of computerized personal medical files, enable exchanges within a service or a network which promote the sharing of knowledge between various health professions, and increase the speed and safety of patient care

ORGANIZATION OF THE M2:
The third semester (M2S3) is provides a more thorough examination of the specialization. After general papers in M1, in their second year students reinforce their expertise in several sectors of re-education, re-adaptation, rehabilitation or medical engineering. Over and above this theoretical knowledge, students will develop practical expertise in collaboration with a hospital, a company or an institution. This internship leads to the production of concrete technological results and a dissertation to be defended before a panel of teaching staff and health professionals.

With the M2 specializations, students gain and develop more advanced notions in the most up-to-date disciplinary fields: clinical research in re-education (RCE); professional training in re-education (DPR); prevention/education in re-education (PER); medical engineering (IM). This degree also prepares students for doctoral research in the corresponding fields.

Requirements

The major is directed primarily towards:

* graduates of a state diploma or a those certified in the re-education professions who are enrolled in the Code de la Santé publique (Parties IV), or students with foreign diplomas who have been admitted by the UPMC´s equivalence commission.
* graduates of a Bachelor of Science and Technology, majoring in Life Sciences, or equivalent (R3 program)
* candidates from the Bachelor of Science and Technology who followed the physics or electronics programs, or with knowledge judged equivalent by the admissions panel (IM program)
* candidates from the medicine and pharmacy streams who have completed three years of study (IM program)
* candidates with the equivalent of an M1 level and with professional experience judged sufficient by the specialization´s admissions panel (comprising the head of the Master´s course and permanent teaching staff from the specialization).

Please note:The RIM course is designed for full time students. Due to the number of hours of presence required and to the significant workload, this course should not be envisaged by those working more than half-time in addition to their studies.

The 3R program of the M1 is recommended for students who wish to follow on with one of the following M2 specializations: clinical research in re-education (RCE); professional training in re-education (DPR); prevention/education in re-education (PER).

The IM program is recommended for students who wish to choose the medical engineering (IM) specialization in M2.

International students welcome

This degree is accessible to French and foreign students from other scientific streams. The educational methods used provide for the integration of students from various backgrounds. Non-French-speaking students will be given personalized support and French language classes will be organized within the university´s languages department.
