The M.A.in German aims to provide students who already have a background in German at undergraduate level with an opportunity to specialise in the areas of translation, literary analysis and applied linguistcs at a postgraduate level. The programme introduces students to academic research, new ideas and approaches. It aims to equip students with academic, analytical, creative and reflective skills in order to foster interest and involvement in research in the field of German Studies. It aims to enhance students' knowledge and understanding of important concepts in German literature, language (including their didactic and methodological application), culture and society.


Contents

The M.A. in German is a one-year degree programme. The course involves two elements: a set of modules on which students will be examined in January and in May/June, and a dissertation (Minor Thesis) which students are expected to complete during the summer after their 2nd semester. Modules GN 611 / GN 612, GN 612 / GN 622 and GN 616 / GN 626 are examined by 1.5 hour examinations each at the end of each semester. the content of GN616 / GN 626 varies from year to year; in recent years modules on Literature and Film, on Fräuleinwunder Literature (women's writing of the nineties and naughties), on Aesthetics and Travel Writing, on Poetry by Female Jewish Authors in the 20th Century and on many other topics were held. The modules GN 612 / GN 622 are unique in Ireland.

Requirements

Candidates normally must have a BA Honours degree with a 2.2 in German, or equivalent. In exceptional cases, candidates who do not fulfil this requirement may be accepted.
