The historiographical evolution of the study of local history in Ireland from the middle ages to the present day. The approaches to the study of local history in France, America, England and Ireland through the study of a number of key texts. The historical approach to local studies as opposed to that of geographers or historical anthropologists. Application of methods developed elsewhere to the Irish situation.
The module deals with the nature of historical evidence for local studies including the ways in which that evidence is created and transmitted. It also provides skills for the interpretation of some of that evidence in the form of palaeographical skills and statistical techniques.
