Internationally, healthcare is becoming an important industry sector with posts in organising and changing healthcare systems prominent as well as jobs in the pharmaceuticals and health technologies industries. As the composition of the world's population changes, there are increasing challenges about how to plan, manage and organise care for an ageing population. Simultaneously, pandemics, viral diseases, natural disasters, terrorism and wars bring their own challenges for managers planning how to respond. Managing expensive technologies, such as telemedicine and pharmaceuticals is crucial for health systems, as these continue to demand increasing expenditures and patients expect access to the best treatment. Managers are required with strategy and change skills, financial acumen and that can interact with the public and professionals. Skills in communication, dealing with ever-changing horizons and world-wide knowledge about health are therefore important.
This course adopts an international perspective on healthcare as a business sector, focusing on key international health system imperatives, including strategic envisioning of health system excellence, leading and enabling change, organisational and professional boundary-spanning, economics, patient and public engagement and political awareness; while also providing a grounding in broad-spectrum business principles.
Specific objectives of the course are to provide:
· Advanced knowledge in key areas relevant to international healthcare systems, their management and reform
· Awareness of key leadership and influencing behaviours
o Knowledge of factors that facilitate complex change management
o Awareness of the need for forward-looking strategising and innovation in sustaining excellence in healthcare delivery
o Political and media 'intelligence' and skills in gaining patient and public perspectives and confidence
o Critical appraisal, reflexive and communication skills to develop managers who understand, practice and promote evidence-based healthcare
· A foundation in topics relevant to international business

The programme is based on core modules plus a critical studies paper.
FIRST SEMESTER
ACCOUNTING & FINANCE FOR MANAGERS - Provides an understanding of accounting information and financial reporting and introduces key aspects of financial analysis and enable students to undertake: interpretation of accounts; ratio analysis and user-group specific tools, e.g. Z scores and credit ratings; accounting information and the stock market; forecasting and valuation.
Business Economics - This module will equip students with the basic knowledge of business economics and examine the ways in which economic theory may be applied to solve real business problems, focussing on aspects of economics vital to a student of business. This module aims for students to be comfortable with the tools of economic analysis as applied to the international, economic and business environments in which modern day businesses and policy makers have to operate.
OPERATIONS MANAGEMENT - Introducing the core concepts in the management of operations producing products and services. These include the management of capacity and inventory, production planning and control, project management and the management and improvement of quality.
MANAGING FOR HEALTH Explores the changing role of management, mainly focusing on the UK National Health Service (NHS), and the growing emphasis on evidence-based health care. The application of core management concepts to the specific environment of health services is highlighted.
HEALTH ECONOMICS Fundamental principles, including: opportunity cost; what economics is (and is not); demand, supply and markets for health care; market failure in health care; 'need' as an economic concept; financing and organising health care; economic approaches to health service evaluation; health economics research in practice.
SECOND SEMESTER
MANAGING PEOPLE AT WORK - Management of people as a key element for organisational success. People as the most complex of all organisational resources to manage. Theoretical and practical issues of people management in the contemporary competitive economic environment.
LEADING INTERNATIONAL HEALTH CARE Takes an international perspective to healthcare as a developing business sector, considering management and leadership issues of key healthcare systems of developed countries and associated health-related industries. International issues of healthcare systems will be included such as consumerism, public participation, managing technologies and pharmaceuticals.
INTERNATIONAL HEALTH This course provides students with a background in key international health issues, including the Millennium Development Goals, the organisation of different health care systems, migration and different epidemiological patterns in developing and developed countries.
SUMMER SCHOOL
Students are required to complete three elective modules. Up to 10 electives are run each year: Management of Health Inequalities and Social Policy; Quantitative Methods for the Investigation and Management of Health Inequalities (compulsory), plus one from Essential Human Resource Practices / International Marketing / Marketing Research / International Business
THE CRITICAL STUDIES paper allows students to bring together many of the skills developed in other areas of the programme and to explore a topic of interest in some depth. The Critical Studies Paper would also be focused on the area of International Healthcare Management.

Most modules are assessed by examination and coursework.

The programme is delivered via a mixture of lectures, seminars and small group tutorials.

Requirements

The minimum requirement is a good first degree (equivalent to a British second-class Honours degree) or above in any discipline. The Director of Graduate Programmes will consider applicants with non-standard qualifications, particularly those with considerable practitioner experience. Evidence of English language proficiency is also required.
The following qualifications are acceptable as providing evidence of proficiency for Graduate programmes in Business. Tests should be taken within two years of applying to the University of Aberdeen for entry:
Either IELTS or TOEFL qualifications are acceptable. IELTS Band 7.0 or above and 6 in the writing component. TOEFL 600 or above or the computer-based TOEFL score 250 or above and 5.0 in the TWE. TOEFL ibt score must be 100, plus 20- 24 in the TWE.
Applicants who do not meet the above standard, may be offered entry on the condition that they undertake the 13 month programme including a four week Business Skills & Communication Course run by the Language Centre at the University of Aberdeen.
Please note, students who accept an offer of a place will be asked to pay a deposit (approximately 10% of the total programme fee) to secure their place. This deposit is later deducted from the tuition fees payable at registration. See for further details.
