The MBA Real Estate sets the analysis of property markets within the context of economics and finance, with a strong focus on business and property strategy. The programme aims to:
o Develop interest in, and knowledge of, economics, investment, finance and management as analytical frameworks for understanding the operations and functions of property markets and institutions.
o Equip graduates with the knowledge and skills necessary to address the current and future challenges associated with professional property practice in a business context.
o Prepare graduates for entry into the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) faculties concerned with Urban Property, and in particular the Commercial Property, Management Consultancy and Valuation faculties.

The programme is based on core and elective modules.
REAL ESTATE ECONOMICS - Introduction to business economics. Property and the macroeconomy. Economic characteristics of property. Institutional and regulatory environment of property (including legal and planning controls). Property market analysis: use, investment and development. Sector analysis: offices, retail, industrial, housing.
VALUATION & FINANCE - Introduction to bonds, equities and property as a form of investment. Mathematics of valuation and investment. Principles underlying basic valuation and investment formulae. Principal methods of valuation. Critical examination of conventional and alternative approaches to valuation.
BUSINESS ECONOMICS - Introducing the key concepts of macroeconomics relevant to international business including foreign exchange markets, labour market issues, unemployment, inflation and economic growth
BUILDING TECHNOLOGY - Practical and theoretical approaches to building, design and the use of space. Functional requirements of buildings. Common construction forms and their implications. Sustainable construction techniques. Building inspections. Understanding the built environment.
SECOND SEMESTER
ADVANCED VALUATION & DEVELOPMENT - Use of computer spreadsheets. RICS Appraisal and Valuation Standards. Development valuation, valuation of over-rented property, trade related valuations and goodwill, valuation of leases, calculations of worth, risk measurement. Basis of local property tax and key elements of the national taxation regime.
REAL ESTATE FINANCE - Relationship and interaction between property use and investment. Modern concepts of corporate real estate. Corporate real estate, business strategy corporate finance. Property as an investment class. Indirect property investment. International property investment. Techniques of property investment analysis.
EITHER: STRATEGIC MARKETING - Marketing management and strategic planning. Marketing in a range of organisational settings, including consumer, industrial, service and voluntary sectors. Systems perspective on key marketing techniques. Relationship between marketing and other management functions in modern organisations.
OR: MANAGING PEOPLE AT WORK - Management of people as a key element for organisational success. People as the most complex of all organisational resources to manage. Theoretical and practical issues of people management in the contemporary competitive economic environment.
FINAL STAGE
PROPERTY RESEARCH - The contemporary property research agenda. Interpretation of property research. Commissioning and managing research. Ethical issues in research. Design and implementation of a research project: topic choice, methodology and method, bibliographical tools and literature review, qualitative and quantitative research techniques.
PROPERTY CASE STUDY - Formulation, design and implementation of a professional case study investigation on an approved topic in property practice. This would normally be in the fields of property investment, corporate real estate, valuation practice or international property.
PLUS TWO MODULES FROM:
REAL ESTATE ASSET MANAGEMENT - To examine the principal ways in which real estate assets must be managed, first from the perspective of the real estate investor and, second, from the perspective of business organisations for whom property is an operational asset.
PROPERTY INVESTMENT - Modelling of property investment markets. Principles of portfolio construction. Practical portfolio construction. Techniques for portfolio management.
Or from a selection of APPROVED MBA ELECTIVES - for example; Securitisation/Managing Creativity/ International Business/ People and Change/ Industrial Marketing.
All modules are assessed by examination and/or coursework.
The programme is delivered via a mixture of lectures, seminars and small group tutorials.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
Take testThe minimum requirement is a good first degree (equivalent to a British second-class Honours degree) or above in any discipline. The Director of Graduate Programmes will consider applicants with non-standard qualifications, particularly those with considerable practitioner experience. Evidence of English language proficiency is also required.
The following qualifications are acceptable as providing evidence of proficiency for Graduate programmes in Business. Tests should be taken within two years of applying to the University of Aberdeen for entry:
Either IELTS or TOEFL qualifications are acceptable. IELTS Band 7.0 or above and 6 in the writing component. TOEFL 600 or above or the computer-based TOEFL score 250 or above and 5.0 in the TWE. TOEFL ibt score must be 100, plus 20- 24 in the TWE.
Applicants who do not meet the above standard, may be offered entry on the condition that they undertake the 13 month programme including a four week Business Skills & Communication Course run by the Language Centre at the University of Aberdeen.
Please note, students who accept an offer of a place will be asked to pay a deposit (approximately 10% of the total programme fee) to secure their place. This deposit is later deducted from the tuition fees payable at registration. See for further details.
The MBA Real Estate is accredited by the RICS, allowing graduates to proceed to the RICS Assessment of Professional Competence and full professional membership of the RICS.
