The Language and Culture programme prepares students for work, further studies or research in any of the following subjects: English, French, German, Spanish, Swedish, Comparative Literature and General Linguistics.

The programme aims to stimulate an independent and critical approach to the study of language and literature. Furthermore, to provide students with the skills and knowledge they need in order to contribute to developments in the field as teachers, researchers or other professional roles. Students will develop an ability to carry out informed analysis of the history, development and characteristics of European languages and literature.

With a focus on major epochs and languages, the programme develops broad, interdisciplinary skills and knowledge within linguistic, literary and anthropological theories and methods, and explores language processes and literary texts in their own cultural context. The curriculum ranges from everyday conversations to novels, plays, poems, and films.

The programme prepares students for work, further studies or research in the field of language and culture in Europe. The skills and knowledge acquired will contribute to professional contexts related to teaching, communication and research involving any of the following subjects: English, French, German, Spanish, Swedish, Comparative Literature or General Linguistics.

Courses

Semester 1 (30 ECTS credits)

  • University Introduction Course: Introduction to academic studies at Linköping University, 3 ECTS
  • The Anthropology of Europe: An anthropological perspective on Europe with emphasis on Sweden, 3 ECTS
  • Language, Culture and Linguistics: Analysis of the relations between language and culture from a linguistic perspective, 6 ECTS
  • Semiotics of Language and Culture: Semiotic theory and semiotic analysis of linguistic
  • Literature, Community and Genre: Relations of literature and community and functions of specific literary genres in European societies from antiquity to the present time, 6 ECTS
  • Narration and literature, 6 ECTS

Semester 2 (30 ECTS credits)

  • Language and Culture in Europe: Interdisciplinary and general European perspectives on language and literature, 15 ECTS
  • Thesis*, 15 ECTS or Specialisation Courses**, 15 ECTS
    *Students will write a 15 ECTS thesis in their chosen language.
    **Courses offered for international students who will not write a thesis in Semester 2. (At the end of Semester 1, the students will decide, after consulting with the Programme director, whether they will write a 15 ECTS thesis during Semester 2 or take 15 ECTS of courses.):
  • Literary course on a topic related to the theme of Language and Culture in Europe, 7.5 ECTS
  • Linguistic course on a topic related to the theme of Language and Culture in Europe, 7.5 ECTS

Semester 3 (30 ECTS credits)

  • Specialisation courses: Students will choose 2-4 linguistic and/or literary courses leading to more detailed knowledge of aspects of the history, the development and the nature of the European languages and literatures, 30 ECTS

Semester 4 (30 ECTS credits)

  • Thesis, 30 ECTS

Students will choose 2-4 linguistic and/or literary courses leading to more detailed knowledge of aspects of the history, the development and the nature of the European languages and literatures.

On completion of the programme students should:

  • have acquired knowledge of the development, relations and characteristics of the European languages and literature. This includes their inception to the present day as well as an understanding of fundamental concepts and methods used in linguistic and literary study.
  • have developed an in-depth understanding of the history of European languages and literature and their international dissemination and interaction with other languages, literature and cultures.
  • have acquired the analytical tools necessary to examine linguistic and literary products (spoken conversations as well as written texts) as instances of contextualised language interaction.
  • be able to conduct independent analyses of issues related to European languages and literature, and to present the results in accordance with approved scholarly methods.

The programme is divided into two parts: Level One comprises the first year, and Level Two the second year. Both Levels are independent units. Students who wish to take only Level One are eligible for a Master of Arts degree (60 credits); if so, they must submit a 15-credit thesis during their second term.

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.

Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.

Requirements

  • A Bachelor's degree (equivalent to a Swedish Kandidatexamen) from an internationally recognised university.
  • Proficiency in English. This is normally attested by means of an internationally recognised test, see below for more information.

Students who do not hold the required degree, but are registered for the last semester of a programme leading to such a degree, may be accepted by some universities.

An official document stating that you are likely to be awarded the degree by the start of the Swedish programme must be sent in with your application. The document must be issued through and certified by a representative of the Academic Registrar's Office, the Examinations Office or equivalent of the institution. Certification from other staff members, such as faculty or college staff members, will not be accepted. The degree certificate has to be presented after registration by 15 October.

Specific requirements

Bachelor's degree with in-depth study of at least 90 credits, i.e. three semesters of full-time study in one of the following subjects: Comparative Literature, General Linguistics, English, French, German, Spanish or Swedish, and approximately two semesters of full-time study in another subject that is relevant to the programme, including a paper corresponding to approximately 10 weeks of study (15 credits).
Each applicant must enclose a Letter of Intent written in English, explaining why they want to study this programme, and a summary of their bachelor’s essay or project. If applicants hold a degree that does not include a bachelor’s essay or project, their Letter of Intent should describe previous studies and academic activities related to the master’s programme or the programmes applied for.

Language tests in English

Applicants must have documented skills in English corresponding to the level of English in Swedish upper secondary education (English B). For applicants who have not studied in Swedish upper secondary education, skills in English are normally attested to by means of an international language test, such as:

  • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) - Paper-based score of 4.5 (scale 1-6) in the written test with a total score of 575 and Internet-based score of 20 (scale 0-30) in the written test with a total score of 90. NB! TOEFL Examinee Score Records are not accepted. All TOEFL tests must be sent straight from Educational Testing Service (ETS).
  • International English Language Testing Service (IELTS) - Academic modules, an overall mark of 6.5 and no section below 5.5
  • Cambridge ESOL Certificate of Proficiency in English/CPE or Certificate in Advanced English/CAE.

  • Students who have applied for a master’s programme at Linköping University through the online national application website universityadmissions.se, and who have chosen a programme at Linköping University as their first priority (ranked as No.1 out of 4), and who are required to pay tuition fees. The scholarship is a tuition fee waiver of 50-100 %.
  • This scholarship programme is not open for students from the following 12 countries: Bangladesh, Bolivia, Burkina Faso, Cambodia, Ethiopia, Kenya, Mali, Mozambique, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia. Students from these countries may apply for a Swedish Institute Scholarship.
