With a Master Degree in Environmental Technology there will be plenty of opportunities to work within the most challenging and interesting fields in both offshore and onshore companies.
By completion of the program the candidate can participate in technical and scientific projects regarding water environment and pollution. This includes management, planning, carry out and final reporting and/or publishing. The candidate will be able to evaluate and analyse environmental conditions in water and suggest actions in order to improve the condition. This also includes laboratory testing of methods, analysis of chemical compounds and evaluation and implementing of the results. The link between theory and practice is essential in the study program and the candidate is given insight and practical training in applying these links in design and operation of treatment plants for water and wastewater.
Introduction
UiS offers two postgraduate engineering specializations in environmental technology. We aim to provide motivated students with the knowledge and skills necessary to become responsible water managers and engineers. Students that want to pursue a career in the oil and gas industry, or among the many offshore related service and research companies, are offered a full time MSc in Offshore Environmental Engineering. Our MSc specialization in Water Science and Technology is offered to students that want to focus on aquatic chemistry and ecology, and technologies for water and wastewater treatment.
Water is life. This incredible chemical with its numerous anomalies is the fundamental nutrient and ecosystem component for all living organisms. We drink it, grow food in it, swim in it, sail on it, wash in it, discharge into it, and we totally depend on it. Historic and modern, rural and urban, small and large societies all depends on water. Civilizations are found, and are still largely established in the vicinity of water resources. Modern infrastructures secure safe quality transport of drinking and process water and provide hygienic and environmentally sound end user treatment for discharges into natural water bodies. Or at least; that is the idea. Industrialisation, urbanisation and modernisation set higher quality standards for required water and at the same time produce waste products with detrimental effects on natural aquatic habitats. We are therefore required to secure responsible management of our water resources based on thorough knowledge of aquatic physical, chemical and biological processes combined with mastering available technologies for analysis and remediation. And who require this? We do. We all do.
Environmental Science and Engineering at UiS started in 1977 with the establishment of a BEng in Environmental Engineering. The first Master programme was offered in 1995 in Offshore Environmental Engineering. Currently there is 30 bachelor and an equivalent number of master students to promote sustainable and sound use of our most precious resource. Come join us!
Both programmes are based on taught courses that include compulsory and elective subjects. The final Master thesis (30 credits) is an independent research work that is done under supervision. Students use electives and the final thesis to immerse into particular subjects of individual interest. We encourage students to check our areas of research for inspiration and the research facilities we offer
The philosophy of the Offshore Environmental Engineering specialization is to combine courses in offshore oil and gas exploration, production technologies and environmental management. The programme is suited for students that are interested in practical technological and administrative techniques for sound environmental management in the offshore industries. The Water Science and Technology specialization seeks to provide students with fundamental and advanced insight into aquatic chemistry, environmental biotechnology and water process engineering. Our approach is to use fundamental mass and energy balance approaches for design and operation of water and wastewater processing technologies. We encourage students to see available technologies in relation to the ecological mechanisms of receiving environments.

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
More informationAdmission requirements for the Master Program in Environmental Technology are a bachelor degree in engineering within the areas of environmental studies, chemistry, biotechnology or corresponding studies. Candidates with a bachelor degree in related areas will also be considered if they have minimum 30 credits of chemistry or similar subjects. All master programmes in technology/civil engineer require 30 credits of mathematics/statistics. For additional information reference is made to:
