Location of University of Antwerp

Students will acquire a thorough insight in local and global threats of biodiversity.

They will be trained in skills to maintain and restore biodiversity at different scales,
from individual species to habitats and landscapes. The study programme consists of
three modules:

  • Fundamentals & skills: compulsory courses focusing on understanding the organism-environment interactions that determine biodiversity, and on the skills required to act in the field of conservation/restoration
  • Conservation and restoration in practice: compulsory courses where ecological insights and methodological proficiency are applied to practical problems in conservation and restoration biology
  • Electives: conservation internship, optional courses, and master dissertation. Students choose from a range of subjects.

Requirements

Candidates should send an application file with detailed information on their previous studies. After evaluation of this application file, the Faculty of Science will decide whether a candidate has access to the programme. Please send an e-mail to the international Student Officer (sonia.brunel@ua.ac.be) for more information on the application procedure.

Students with diplomas from outside the Flemish community all bachelor degrees in the field of Science, Applied Sciences or Life Sciences that have a strong focus on biology will be considered (e.g. Biology, Bio-engineering, Environmental science, ...).

Students with diplomas of the Flemish community

1. Direct admission is granted to holders of the diploma of Bachelor in Biology.
2. Admission is conditional for holders of the following diplomas:

  • Bachelor of Bio-Engineering Sciences
  • Bachelor of Biomedical Sciences
  • Bachelor of Pharmaceutical Sciences
  • Bachelor of Veterinary Sciences
  • Bachelor of Medicine
  • Bachelor of Biochemistry and Biotechnology

The succesful completion of a preparatory programme (15 to 90 ECTS) may be
required.

Language requirements

The programme is taught in English. Candidates are therefore required to demonstrate their proficiency in one of the following ways:

  • by submitting proof that they have studied at least one academic year in an English-language bachelor or master programme. The Board of Admission may ask additional proof of your proficiency in English.
  • Applicants can also prove their knowledge on the basis of a language certificate showing their TOEFL or IELTS results:
  • TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language, organized by ETS): paper-based TOEFL level of minimum 550, or an internet-based TOEFL level of minimum 79-80.
  • IELTS (International English Language Testing System): a minimum score of at least 6.5, and on each part minimum 6.0.
