The aim of this programme is to develop insight in the origins and development of institutions and their influence on social relations, economic development, and individual and collective well-being.
This Master's programme is concern with the question how and why from the late Middle Ages until the present day, institutions - norms, rules and organizations - have emerged and developed on the local, national and European level. How do institutions function, what has been their social and economic impact? Questions that will be discussed in this programme are for instance: Why are welfare, security, justice, and maybe even happiness better realized in some societies, and less in other? What is the role of, for instance, citizenship, state formation, voluntary associations, political parties or the creation of markets in the development of welfare, security or justice? Why is it so difficult to avoid negative effects, such as social polarization, alienation, exploitation or damage to the environment? Students in this programme develop insight in social theory and skills to apply comparative methods in order to analyze the mechanisms that might explain the differential development of cities, regions, states and continents, as well the continuities and changes through time.
Contents
The year is divided in four blocks of ten weeks. In each block you follow two courses.
Block 1
- Growth and Inequality: what are the institutional conditions for economic growth since the late Middle Ages? (7,5 ECTS)
- Comparative History: students develop insight in various approaches to comparative history and to apply methodological skills needed for comparative research (7,5 ECTS):
Block 2
- Research seminar: the goal of this course is to develop and execute a research project on the basis of historical, theoretical and methodological insights developed in the first block. The first part you explore a specific historical topic (topic depends on the supervisor, which rotates every year). The end-product of this course is an extensive research paper. Examples of potential topics: The Great Transformation; Limits to Growth; The Dutch Republic (15 ECTS)
- Tutorial Capita Selecta Politics & Society: study of secondary literature in preparation of the MA Thesis, in small groups (max. 6 students). A series of topics will be offered, each broad enough to cover a variety of research interests among students; end product is a paper discussing the historiography of the topic of the tutorial.
Block 3
- Research seminar (continued)
- MA Thesis: The aim is to write a thesis (25.000 words) based on the study of secondary and primary sources, and on the insights and skills developed in the program. The choice of a topic is free, within limits: it should be about politics and society in historical perspective and there has to be a supervisor available. (15 ECTS).
Block 4
- MA Thesis (continued)
- Professional development, choice of two options:
- The Welfare state: the history of the welfare state in comparative perspective is discussed as an introduction to an applied approach of instruments for the analysis of welfare state policies. Students learn to analyze and evaluate policy documents, and to interpret them in the context of welfare state regimes (7,5 ECTS)
- Internship (7,5 ECTS).
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
