This is a new course within the MRes Social Sciences Programme. It is run jointly by the Faculty of Development and Society's Graduate School and the Faculty of Health and Wellbeing's Centre for Health and Social Care Research.
The course provides broad research training in the social sciences along with research skills specifically related to health, illness and healthcare. It's ideal if you work for a charity or non-governmental organisation or if you work in health and social care.
You gain a sound knowledge of the issues involved with
* research design
* ethics
* philosophical assumptions and arguments
* epistemologies
* contemporary research
* aspects of a knowledge society.
You study a range of research methods including
* biographical research
* case study
* ethnography
* experimental design
* media analysis
* survey design and analysis
The course enables you to complete masters-level study alongside our diverse team of internationally-recognised active researchers with research backgrounds including
* medical sociology
* health economics
* philosophy
* nursing.
Our research staff also have practitioner experience in o physiotherapy o occupational therapy o nursing o midwifery o podiatry o radiotherapy o social work. Many have experience of working overseas including South Asia and Eastern Europe.

* individuals and families living in ex-industrial, high deprivation settings
* socially isolated and marginalised groups and individuals

Modules
Core modules (30 credits each)
* research designs for health - this module equips you with the knowledge and skills to critically assess alternative research designs and make appropriate choices for a range of health-related research topics
* social science theory and perspectives in health research - this module evaluates theoretical and philosophical research concerning social science and contemporary issues.
Options (15 credits each)

Dissertation (60 credits)
For the masters, you need to finish the postgraduate diploma and then present a 60 credit dissertation, which requires you to conduct a research investigation.
You can take individual modules as short courses or combine them towards a masters in research, postgraduate diploma or postgraduate certificate. For some modules entry requirements apply.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
Take testNormally a good honours degree in a suitable subject or equivalent professional experience. If you have suitable qualifications or experience you may be exempt from some modules, allowing you to gain the awards more quickly.
If English is not your first language, you need an overall IELTS score of 6.5 or above.
