People working in local and regional economic development, and urban and regional regeneration, come from a wide range of academic and professional backgrounds. It is often difficult to get suitable training to improve or update skills in this fast moving field.
This degree provides an academic framework of theory, knowledge and skills relevant to professionals working in this area. It allows you to train even if you are unable to come to university because of other commitments. You can complete a certificate, a diploma or a masters degree. The certificate qualifies you for membership of the professional body, the Institution of Economic Development (IED) and you will be able to use the designation member of the MIED.
A consortium of three universities and the IED manage the overall course content. The universities are Sheffield Hallam, the University of Dundee and the Coventry University. Other universities provide certain modules on the course, for example the University of Plymouth.
The consortium enables you to share course development work and specialist knowledge across several universities. It complements the existing provision in the field, for example Sheffield Hallam´s taught MSc in Urban Regeneration which has run since 1996.
Support and guidance is provided regionally by extensive use of online learning. Some modules involve Saturday workshops.
