The MAsters on Photonic NETworks engineering (MAPNET) is a masters programme under the European Union's Erasmus Mundus Programme.
MAPNET is focused on the competence related to the generation, manipulation, transport and detection of signals exploiting photons as a support to convey information. This area is currently recognised as one of the most significant within Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) and the enabling architectures for the future Internet. In fact, the increasing quantity and importance of data exchange and relevant services in next generation Internet requires to utilise in an efficient manner advanced technologies such as data transport over optical fibers.
The Masters program consists of 120 ECTS (two academic years). Each semester allows 30 ECTS to be gained. The first three semesters are based on traditional courses, lab exercise and laboratory sessions, while the last is based on independent work related to the Masters thesis.
The Masters takes place in the buildings and relevant laboratories of the four participating universities.
The Masters includes a mandatory student mobility component in at least two of the participating institutions. The complete mobility options will be provided by the student after the selection procedure. The first year of the Masters will be spent in the same institution.
The first year will cover basic subjects and provide a solid background to face the second year, which sees a differentiation of modules depending on the student Masters plan. Each partner will offer a propaedeutic pool of fundamental courses for the first semester of the Masters programme. This semester will cover advanced topics in maths, physics, statistics, systems and programming.
The third semester of the Masters will be spent in a different institution, covering specialisation courses in view of the independent project developed during the last semester of the project and which will be reported in the Masters thesis.
Each institution provides a different selection of courses in the first year to allow students to match them to their prior knowledge and preferences. The final year consists of more specialist course culminating in a six month research project.
