Established in 1998, PAC provides a service for the central processing of applications for admission to 4th level courses in Ireland. The site will therefore be of interest to anyone considering postgraduate study. PAC is committed to ensuring that all applications are dealt with fairly and efficiently. PAC is a not-for-profit company registered in Ireland (291366). The programme is set against the backdrop of the recent global turbulence in financial markets and the related economic downturn. Societies such as Ireland are adjusting very rapidly to change in the external and internal environments. This requires us to re-think prevailing assumptions about the nature and direction of socio-economic development both in Ireland and elsewhere. The key idea underlying the this M.A. is to interrogate the political economy, power dynamics and cultural dimensions of social change in transitional societies, using Ireland as a key point of reference. The intellectual approach will embrace both comparative and historical dimensions of societies in transition. We hope to stimulate students to think about the role that sociological analysis can play in helping to advance solutions to the current social and economic challenges.
The taught programme is built around three components: a core theoretical module, substantive courses, and methods courses. Beyond this, the researching and writing of a thesis constitutes 30 credits. The programme is marked out of 90 credits, with the credits for each component assigned as follows:
Theory + Substantive Courses = 45 credits
Methods Courses + Thesis Seminar = 15 credits
Thesis = 30 credits
Total Credits =90 credits
