The Master of Science in Software Engineering degree at NUIM exposes graduates in computer science and related disciplines to the many facets of this complex area – the technical, the methodological, the organizational – so that successful participants will subsequently be able to lead major projects in software engineering in many industrial and commercial sectors.
This course has been funded under the Graduate Skills Conversion Programme, significantly reducing the fees payable by students.
Career options:
Students are qualified for many jobs in the software industry. Many students gain full-time employment with the company who sponsored their work placement.
Past graduates in the Masters programme have been accepted for membership of the IEI. Associate membership (AIEI) has been granted to those graduates with less than 2 years work experience, with Ordinary membership (MIEI) granted after a minimum of 2 full years work experience.
Each module will be delivered as a series of intensive 1-day lectures. Each module also has associated practical work which can be completed off-site. This
flexible delivery structure is designed to allow both full-time and part-time students to complete each module.
Participants will be required to complete a six-month period working in an industrial environment and to present a dissertation on issues pertaining to the execution of this work. Alternatively students may opt for a research-based project that is not based on their work placement.
Duration: Full-time and Part-time

Admission will normally be restricted to graduates who have achieved a good honours degree in Computer Science or a discipline involving significant amounts of practical and theoretical issues in computer science. Note that this degree requires students to have a good initial knowledge of Computer Science, and ability in Mathematics. Applications from highly qualified students from Ireland Institutes of Technology are welcomed. Ideally, applicants will have experience of working on industrial software engineering projects. The number of places on the degree is limited and consequently admission is on a competitive basis. Thus, we cannot guarantee admission even if you meet the entry requirements.
