(Formerly MSc in International Health: Non Communicable Diseases). The global burden of disease is shifting. Non communicable diseases and illnesses, which include diabetes, mental illness, cardiovascular conditions (mainly heart disease and stroke), cancers, and chronic respiratory conditions account for about 60% of all deaths worldwide, with an estimated 80% of deaths occurring in low and middle-income countries. This programme looks at the impact of this global burden of diseases, and explores emerging and promising practice by looking at ways in which different health systems are tackling the multiple risk factors, and are developing prevention, treatment and care services to meet their needs.
This programme will provide an innovative learning base to develop the action platform called for in the WHO 2008-2013 Action Plan for the Global Strategy for the Prevention and Control of Noncommunicable Diseases.
Participants will be able to remain on site, continue in their working environment, study at times that are convenient to them, their families and the health service requirements of their country, and their organisations.
Students who follow this programme will be equipped to:
* Understand the nature and impact of non communicable diseases globally, and in local environments.
* Analyse the social, economic, behavioural and political determinants of non communicable diseases.
* Share policy approaches for prevention, treatment and management of non communicable diseases
* Understand clinical approaches and models of best and most efficacious and equitable practice in treatment and care across different countries, and share implementation strategies through case study
* Understand different health system structures, and approaches such as primary health care, and family medicine.
* Engage in health research
* Work at senior level within a range of health and health related programmes and services in low income and emerging economy countries
Building transferable skills are important. Within this programme there is an emphasis on leadership and development training which aims to embed skills in building, supporting and managing multi-disciplinary health and social care teams to deliver effective care.
The programme is delivered using an innovative blend of online learning opportunities supported by online learning environments. The programme is designed in such a way that, with access to the internet, you will be able to study at the times and in the places that suit you best. The programme will involve mixed teaching approaches, including independent study and reflection, as well as online discussion and group project work.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
