This online programme in Surgical Sciences, also known as the Edinburgh Surgical Sciences Qualification or ESSQ, is jointly offered by the University of Edinburgh and the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.
The Edinburgh Surgical Sciences Qualification consists of a modular programme building up by credit accumulation from Certificate, through Diploma and with the addition of a small research project, to a Masters degree.
The modules leading to the Postgraduate Diploma cover the UK Intercollegiate Surgical Curriculum and will consequently prepare students for the Membership of the Royal College of Surgeons (MRCS) examination, but with more emphasis on acquired knowledge and its application.
The third-year MSc research project serves as an opportunity to develop the foundation of an academic career in surgery.
The programme is delivered using a purpose-built learning environment which supports a variety of learning styles and allows students flexibility in their study patterns.
Students are supported throughout the programme through asynchronous discussion with eTutors, all leading clinicians in their field, and have access to a large structured online learning resource including subscriptions to key online books and journals.
At Certificate and Diploma level, students must attend an end-of-year examination. This will be held in Edinburgh for UK-based students and with a pre-approved partner institution for international students.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
Take testApplicants must aspire to a career in surgery and possess an acceptable basic medical degree obtained normally within five years of the proposed date of admission.
