Programme Description

2010 RO agent guidance 2010 RO agent guidance 2010 RO agent guidance

The STID programme provides students with advanced knowledge of the role of science and technology in international development from 1800 until the present day; a detailed understanding of the relevance and utility of various theoretical approaches to science and technology in development; and the ability to compare and contrast the appropriateness of different disciplinary approaches in an examination of the role of science and technology in various international development settings. The programme encourages students to relate the academic study of science and technology to questions of public concern in developing countries.

Students will gain development-focused and practical experience through the option of a development research methodology course and the chance to undertake their dissertation research alongside researchers, during an internship with a development agencies, or contributing to one of the many international projects we are involved in.

Students also attend a series of `State of the Art´ seminars in international development practice. These introduce colleagues from across the University and beyond, who work in development directly or in development-relevant research projects, to discuss their experiences. The series brings students into direct contact with scientists, medics and engineers who actively work on development-relevant projects and with whom students may be able to develop dissertation topics.
