The MA. in Human Rights and Conflict Management is an interdisciplinary post-graduate program, which focuses on the linkages between Human Rights and Conflict Management. The understanding of such linkages is integrated with a range of related fields and issues dealt with during the didactic period (international and human rights law, humanitarian law, development, geopolitics, philosophy of human rights, peacekeeping and peacebuilding operations, conflict management etc.). Along academic skills, solid grounding of the development of related practical expertise is provided during both, the didactic and internship period: monitoring and report writing, project design and management etc.
The Master program is organized in collaboration with the International Research Laboratory on Conflict, Development & Global Politics of the Scuola Sant'Anna and the International Training Programme for Conflict Management (ITPCM), a post-graduate programme of the Scuola within the Masters and Training Programmes Division. The Master program is organized under the patronage of United Nations Regional Information Centre (UNRIC).
The Master of Arts in Human Rights and Conflict Management brings together a core teaching staff and leading specialists from around the world. Lecturers and trainers are chosen among academics, diplomats, international organizations officers and NGOs activists, thus offering a wealth of both academic and field expertise.
Main educational goals are as follows:
- To train high-rank professionals who will work in design, management and monitoring positions
- To train professionals who will combine, in a dynamic, non-sequential way, critical knowledge and technical-operational skills as the key components of an extremely professional service in complex situations.
- To train professionals who are aware of the mutual connections between the protection of human rights and conflict management, and who possess a sound juridical and methodological background and practical-operational skills in such areas.
- To train professionals who, in the design and management of actions and in decision-making processes, will keep into account the historical, geopolitical, economic dimensions as well as the "gender" component and the complexity of intercultural and international relations.
Internship and career path
Graduate and post-graduate students, who wish to complete and integrate an academic track with a one-year, field-oriented and professionalizing program, are encouraged to participate. The Master of Arts in Human Rights and Conflict Management is committed to provide its students with valuable work experiences and employment contacts at a world-wide level. Annual Recruitment is organized with human resource managers of NGOs and the UN Volunteers Programme. A regular information service regarding recruitment opportunities within International Organisations and NGOs is also offered. Special career coaching sessions focusing on presentation skills will be provided.

Our last career placement survey shows that 75% of the ex-students from the MAHRCM are currently employed in human rights related positions at reputable national and international organizations, namely, UN agencies, IOM, OSCE etc.
The one-year MA. in Human Rights and Conflict Management comprises 67 academic credits.
The academic year, starting in January 2012, is structured along two main phases. At the beginning of the year, a residential phase will provide the theoretical tools and will strengthen academic writings of the participants. The residential phase consists of two distinctive modules continuing up to July 2012. During this phase, lectures, seminars, group work and presentations, as well as the use of role-playing sessions and simulation techniques represent the teaching methodology.

Internship phase: 480 hours + 70 hours of project work
As part of the program, the internship aims at supplementing the in-class training with a relevant hand-on experience. Students are required to complete a (min) 3 months - (max) 6 months internship, starting August 2012, with a renowned organization working in the areas of human rights protection/promotion, conflict prevention/resolution, humanitarian assistance or development, either in the field or at headquarters.
The program is finalized with the completion of a final written project related to the internship experience, and to the subjects covered during the residential phase. Graduation will take place in Spring 2013.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
Take testThe MAHRCM is a competitive programme open to a maximum of 28 candidates. 14 places out of 28 are meant for non EU candidates. Candidates must meet the following minimum requirements:
(1) Have a three years (at least) university degree or equivalent, issued by a university institution or equivalent. Students expecting to graduate before 31 December 2010 are also eligible.
(2) Understand, speak and write English at least at LEVEL C1, (CEFR for Languages, CoE).
Knowledge of any other language would be an asset. Any voluntary, professional or training experience in human rights related fields or in war and conflict areas is an advantage for applicants.
