Occupational fields associated to the pharmaceutical industry (chemical synthesis of active ingredients and excipients, production of pharmaceutical formulations, drug conditioning) and cosmetic industry are strictly regulated domains and consequently, are unable to exist and progress without modern infrastructures for production, quality control and research. Chemistry is deeply involved in such fields, owing its inherent specific applications. The Romanian work market, although the communitary one, exhibits special offers addressed to specialists in chemistry, with direct applications for the pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries. These production fields are prospering and offer generous and competitive experimental endowments.
The master cycle entitled " The chemistry of drugs and cosmetic products" is willing to represent an adequate response to requirements issued by the occupational work market. Its major aim is the fundamental knowledge transfer and formation of the practical expertise (behavioral and experimental) contributing to formation of competitive specialists acting in such rigorously regulated domains. The master cycle is developed based on the principle of interdisciplinarity, bringing proportional inputs from all domains of the chemical knowledge, and not only (pharmacy, physics and biology should also be included). Main inputs are provided by organic chemistry (synthesis and isolation of active ingredients, pharmacologic action) and analytical chemistry (separation and assay of target compounds, their structural characterization and overall quality control). Basic know-how about physical chemistry of drugs (pharmacokinetics, membrane transfer processes, correlations structure/activity/efficacy, and transport through colloidal systems) is also included. A general perspective is assumed through insights on catalytic synthesis principles and fundamentals in the pharmaceutical technology as well as a concise presentation of inorganic and organo-metallic compounds used as active principles in pharmaceutical and cosmetic products.
For each of the above mentioned study directions, the impact and connections with the strict regulations features (i.e. rules for good manufacturing practices -GMP-, good laboratory practices -GLP-, good clinical practices -GCP- overlaid to ISO rules, i.e. ISO/CEI 17025/2005) should be highlighted. Consequently, the major topics have been completed with a course referring to quality management, control and assurance.
The final aim of this master cycle is to generate a precise professional orientation, equally representing a natural continuation of the knowledge acquired during the first 3 years of the universitary teaching cycle. Graduation of such a master cycle allows formation of a solid integrated background of knowledge relating with various specialized top activity domains.
