These programmes are AHRC approved research preparation Master´s schemes to enable you to progress to a PhD or MPhil in information management or records management.
If you are naturally curious, enjoy meeting people, and enjoy analysing data, you are probably well suited for a postgraduate programme that provides you with research training and specialist subject knowledge. If you want to make a career, eventually, as a senior manager in records management then this programme should ensure you get a flying start.
At the end of the programme you should be able to:
o Analyse the requirements of information users
o Evaluate records management policies
o Apply a range of quantitative and qualitative data analysis techniques
There is a wide range of optional modules, enabling you to develop skills and knowledge in information literacy, or electronic records management, or knowledge management - the choice is up to you, and there is considerable flexibility.
The course should provide you with a professional qualification as well as the research preparation (the courses will be put forward for accreditation with the Society of Archivists shortly). The schemes are based on programmes that are currently accredited by the Society of Archivists.
The programme is divided into two parts, Part One (taught modules) and Part Two (dissertation).
In Part One (totalling 120 credits), you take a specific research training module as well as some other core modules in records management. You choose from a wide variety of option modules, so that you can select the subject specialist knowledge and skills that you need. All the subject specialist modules will provide you with further support on research preparation. If you successfully pass Part One you may progress to Part Two, in which you will need to complete a 60 credit dissertation of not more than 15,000 words on an approved topic.
You may exit with a Diploma (at 120 credits) or a Certificate (60 credits).
AssessmentThe programme is assessed on the basis of coursework (some optional modules may have an examination element) and the dissertation.
Course assignments for the subject specialist modules encourage you to reflect on a problem of topical and professional relevance, and should equip you with a deeper understanding of the management problems, as well as giving you a skill set to tackle such problems in your future career.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
Take testThe minimum basic entry requirement for a Masters degree is normally a good Honours Degree (in any discipline) + minimum 6 months experience in an information resource management environment, or suitable experience for a relevant period of time, dependent on level of responsibility and breadth of activity.
Non-native English speakers are required to take a University recognised test of academic English language proficiency with required minimum proficiency levels equating to an IELTS score of 6.5 or a TOEFL score of 580 (paper based test) or 237 (computer based) with an essay rating of 5.0. Applicants who have successfully undertaken a Bachelors degree in a UK University are exempt from this requirement.
